San Jose Stereo Shop

Hey there rxzoco ...... I too am in the Bay Area and also have a 2003 SL55 which is under a huge re-fab right now. My buddy Carlos owns "Auto Image Custom" in San Jose and they have done some amazing upgrades on my Merc.

He is now working on the stereo portion of the project and just began working on the woofer box. Below is a shot he sent me yesterday of their progress. You can reach Carlos at (408) 723-3018 and feel free to mention Benjamin referred you for some added love

Take care and have fun with upgrading your ride !!!

Sub woofers are ok but you do get a lot of phase cancellation from low
frequency road noise. My 63 had the worse sub I have ever heard, if you
turned it up it could completely mask upper bass mid and top. The trouble
is you need a separate volume control on the sub so you can increase the
bass from the bass/mid drivers, without increasing the sub, by increasing
the bass control it seems to increase both sub and upper bass frequencies.
Personally I rather have just good bass drivers working down to about 40Hz
than have a sub.. This is my thoughts, some of the latest cars may have separate controls. I like the Bose system in my 65, it seems to have better control than the Harmon system in the 63, sorry if this is boring..

Yeah, I know, but it is great for watching movies, real estate for internet surfing, and built in navigation when out of service area which seems to happen to me at the worst times :-( ........ I demo'ed the AVIC-8000NEX right after CES and it is a amazingly device. The mirror-link from my droid is killer !!!

Any word on this project? Drive customs in slo ca does all of my audio work that i cant do myself (custom box and mount fabrication). Theyre knowledgeable, fair, and do excellent work. Id likely look to them for a proper sub in the sl, since i dont like messing with the integrated stock head units.

The key to preventing phasing is a good crossover and equalizer more than a good volume control. Box design has a lot to do with it too. Sealed boxes seem to blend better with the upper sound stage.

I know nothing about SL sound system location, but i remember seen some build where they put the sub in the passenger foot rest, the threat was in this forum so you can do some search for better details.
