Two seats. That's all you get.

Figure around $65,000 per seat, and the rest of the car is free (except for the cell phone bill).

The special trim in this car is just making it look as though there are. There are two storage bins, one deep enough to hold the CD changer and the other much more shallow because there's a bunch of electronic stuff underneath it. The "seat backs" have a pull out strap to tie stuff down, but there's no space for a passenger.

So, no, the R230 is just a two seater. The prevous R129 had pretend back seats which were also useless, as does the Aston Martin and Jaguar XK (why to they bother?) At least Mercedes has come clean with the new car. Even the new Bentley, which is billed as a 4 seater is tight in the back unless you're supermodel thin, which I am not, due to my dedication over many years in supporting the world wine industry.

The R129 had a kid seat right? An additional purchase?

The R230 doesn't as far as I know.

Rear seats were an early option in lower models; if you didn't have them, you got a flat area with storage bins just like the R230. They dropped the option later and you ended up with two useless rear seats whether you wanted them or not.

The previous generation to the R129, the R107 had a variant called the SLC which was fixed roof but the space taken up by the hood was used instead to provide better rear seating.

Trying to make a 4-seater hardtop convertable screws up the shape like anything; just look at the SC430.

With two young children the child seats you get in the R129, XK, etc are great. I've had both.

I was personally sad to see the SL55 had no seat belts.

Not just that... the rear seats on the SC430 are UTTERLY useless. I've sat in the rear of an R129 SL and my dad has fit somewhat comfortably at the back of a 996 Turbo. But I mean the SC430, relegating someone to the back seats is a sure way to lose a friend or two.
