selling my beautiful sl65

I am unfortunately at the point in my life where I need to sell my sl65. Its been a fantastic vehicle but the family has grown. I posted in the classified but figured I'd put a link over here just in case.

Way too expensive, failed emission test (Designated GROSS POLLUTER) and too many miles.

Failed emission test indicates a worn engine or peripheral components failing. This is a $30-35000 car on a good day.

Wrong on the failed emissions. If you can read it went in about an hour later and passed. The place that did it hooked the car up wrong and said they were sorry but weren't capable of doing it. I appreciate your opinion but you can keep it to yourself. If you can find this car in this shape with these features for $35000 I'd be shocked. They are going for that and a bit lower at auction.

You have unrealistic expectations about how much the car is worth. There is NO way this goes on auction for $45k.

This is the Blackbook value for the car. For cars this age they are average or worse unless they have been parked and not driven.

Making a post like this is going to get you an opinion whether you like it or not.

I understand your response and reason for it. I know it's on the high side but these cars arent common and book isn't as relevant. You can certainly find them with less miles or a lower price but you will most likely have to replace all of the common expensive items that have already been done. You get what you pay for and anyone who knows these cars can vouch for that.

Car looks great but I agree on not getting that price. I just purchased my 06 sl65 in October, black with more options than yours, with 43k miles for less than that including the shipping from the dealer in California to North Carolina. Not trashing to bash your sale thread just letting you know what is out there competition wise. GLWS!!! Clean looking car though!!!

Thank you for the compliment. I put or best offer on the price. I realize that I'm not going to get that price but no matter the price I put people are going to negotiate. If someone is serious I'm willing to work with them.

You price is so far off the mark that you may not even get offers. I feel many will not want to insult you by offering $15k+ less than your sale price. Starting at $38k may elicit some offers. Otherwise, plan on letting it sit for a very long time and or possibly never selling.

WRONG!!! GROSS POLLUTER is NOT a DEATH SENTENCE!

GROSS POLLUTER is NOT a DEATH SENTENCE...

Unless YOU want it to be!

A loose gas cap can cause you to fail a SMOG test.

FWIW-
I just bought a 1997 BMW 850Ci in absolutely MINT 100% Original Condition with only 63K Original Miles for a ridiculously low price, because the car was flagged as a "Gross Polluter" during the Smog test here in SoCal...

The inept mechanic at the BMW Dealer saw the Check Engine Light and condemned the car saying the problem could be the (2) MAF Sensors, The (2) Throttle Bodies, The (2) Cats, The (2) O2 sensors or ALL of these or even a bad V12 engine... They quoted $2,500-$15,000 to diagnose and repair.

I bought the car which ran fantastic. Got it home and then I plugged in my $65 Harbor Freight OBD tester and it showed fault code for the "02 Sensor".

New Bosch O2 Sensors are insanely expensive... NOT!! They are just $62...

Not knowing which one was bad I took out a second mortgage and I bought two ($124). 15 minutes later they were both installed and the Check Engine Light went out...

I saved $8000-$10,000 because of a defective $62 Sensor.

The same situation could easily be the case with ANY MB as 90K miles is nothing on a modern engine...

As the OP wrote the car passed SMOG soon thereafter.

The car wasnt a gross polluter. The tech dual probed the exhaust which gives a false reading. You only do that on cars with no cross over and it doubled the readings. They applogized bet the damage was done. I literally drove it ten miles immediately to a station that knew how to do it and it passed with no issues. Again, nothing wrong with the car! Regarding the price I'm trying not to beat a dead horse but maybe it's just my area but similar cars (less miles) are asking $59,900. $30k is auction price. I am flexible on the price but it sounds like people who aren't even looking for one are beating me up. I value what people have to say but at this point it comes down to what someone is willing to spend for an excellent car and what I'm willing to take. If someone is truly looking for a beautiful sl65 I'm willing to talk and work something out.

I'd consider dropping the price a little more even if you plan on negotiating, as you said there are not many SL65 in existence but it recently seems alot of the higher mileage SL65s are coming into the market, with cars with 50-60k in miles going for 35-40k. Its sad to say but this car does not do well at all as the miles and years go on.

I remember getting my 65 for a steal with full warranty for 50k/4yrs, with mid 30s on the clock and 8k after market wheels for a little more then your price and this was 2 years ago. The car was the dealer's personal car with up to date maintenance, he tried to sell it for a year at 65k, over the months he kept dropping it till he finally gave in at almost 15k off his asking price, only thing I had to do was fly to Cleveland that evening, give him the check and drove 5 hours back to DC.

It's a very nice car your posting and I hope you the very best in selling it, even though its sad to see it go, but you need to know the market for this car, just look at TTboost FS thread, he had 20k miles less than your car, had BBS wheels just like yours (I think those are BBS wheels in your pics) full carbon fiber interior including a carbon fiber steering wheel, and EC ECU and TCU tune, and he was trying to sell the car for over 6 months before selling it for 40k with about 10k loss for not many miles he put on and a year of ownership. Just giving you a heads up on what the market is like for this car

GLWS!!!

SS2Z06 - 2nd VT12enthusiast. I picked up my car 2 years ago; it's a year older (2005) had 36k miles, ECU/TCU Upgrade, BBS wheels, +$000s in extra parts. It remains in excellent shape. I paid $45k.

If I were to sell her now (42k miles), with new installed CF rear spoiler and diffuser, and C&R Racing HE, I'd look for ~$38k.

That said, I also have an early E55 for sale that I've priced high...she's also in fantastic shape ('99 w/53k miles), black-on-black, completely stock. I really am on the fence about selling her as the natass 55s are bullet proof and she's in such good shape. "If" someone wants her badly enough, I'll part with her. Otherwise, I'll ride her for years to come...

Jus sayin. GLWS!

So I've taken everyone's opinions and updated the price. I now have it at $39,950 obo. I appreciate the kind words about the vehicle.
