Main seal replacement
I had my 55 in this week for some minor service issues and I had seen a couple of drops of oil. My indy checked it out and it seems I need a main seal. He old me that the job itself is not difficult but they have to drop the transmission to do it. $900 to do this sound reasonable? He says that he doesn't think its an urgent issue but I hate having things hanging around and like to keep it in good shape.
I'll let you know how it goes.

900 is fair ,unless you have a lift ,a tranny jack and the good part of a day IMO

I look on this as a maintenance issue so once it's done, I wont have to worry again for a long time!

That is correct. On these vehicles the rear main seal is a routine maintenance item.

If it's a rear main be sure and replace the bolts and the seal plate. I thought my rear main was leaking and when I pulled the trans it was the trans front pump seal. I replaced the pump and the TQ while I had it out. 900.00 is a decent price for a main seal replacement.

$900 is not a very good price. I go the main seal changed on my W163 where the indy also had to remove the transfer case as well as the transmission for $530 with a $89 labor rate. The book time for the W163 is about 10 hours. AS you can see it doesn't take that long for a trained tech. Find one that you trust and get him to bill by the hour used and not the book time.
The book time is about 8 hours for the R230 but can be done in about 5, so you do the math.
