I finally got an email from my contacts in Germany (they were away in Geneva) regarding the rumoured delay...recall...problem... with the SL 55.

It turns out it was not a technical problem with the car but simply a delay in delivery from one of AMG's eletronics suppliers:

"The delay was caused by short time logistical problems of one of DaimlerChrysler´s suppliers (electronic control unit) . There never were any technical reasons for the delay. Additionally this
delay only was relevant for the European markets. U.S. delivery has first priority so that there never was a delay in the States."

Would that mean that the fuel problems remain?

I haven't heard anything definite on US release...I think that is really up to MBUSA not AMG.
He just says that there will be no delays in US deliveries.

the only fuel "problem" I am aware of is that you have a high performance engine with alot of grunt...and it gets thirsty...
comes with the territory...
If you drive like you are on a test drive everyday you are going to get low mileage! :p

It willbe interesting to hear how fouad does with his...

If that's the case then we should be seeing the SL55 around 03??

Fuel problems.
No there is no fuel problems. I have my ML 55, and it consume much more fuel than SL 55. About accelaration, the car is amazing. It feels heavy like a bear, but it´s fast like a cheetah. Before I had an SLK 32 AMG, but you can´t conpare it to my SL55.
There is no words who can explain this car, you are welcome to Sweden to try it.

Oh Man...Fouad...I am so jealous!!!

Thanks for the response on the this fuel question....It is really annoying when people start unfounded rumours. Some posters have less than honorable agendas.

My ML500 burns more fuel than my CLK 55 did as well...gearing has a huge impact on fuel economy.

Enjoy

August 02 is possible, MBUSA would not have included the SL55 in the current brochure for US if not coming in 02. I also got my hands on the training book for US dealers and it includes all the info on the SL500 and SL55 AMG, I really think it will be US delivery Fall 2002. But you never know, just my best educated guess.

SL55 is supposed to have US introduction at NY in April. Intro's generally less than six months before release.

I think the US market won't have to worry, we account for more then 50 percent of their customers.

Really ? Is that for all models or just the predicted SL numbers ?

Theres roughly the same amount of people in the USA as in mainland Europe. Theres mercs everywhere here (particularly in Germany/Holland where the taxi is a MB etc etc) - From where Ive been in the USA, I havent been to a place with MB's *everywhere*.

Add in the rest of the world, and Id be suprised to see USA at above 50%

I could very well be wrong (and suprised!)
