Wheels..you must be joking !

I know we have had some heated exchanges but I will admit I love my 20 inch wheels, but as it seems the spacers are dangerous I am going for some
19 inch wheels because I can't stand the bobbly ride. The only problem is
getting a wheel the right ET if that is right. I can't find anyone who will
tell me the formula to work out the size to fit the wide body, I have asked
before, but don't remember getting a clear answer, plus the fact it was for
20's but now I want 19's. All I know is the rears should be 10.5 to 11 inches
wide. 19's will give a better ride, and performance.

He has a widebody SL. Tirerack will probably not be much help.

First, take the wheel and spacer off and measure the distance from the hub to the backside of the wheel with the spacer on the wheel. See video.

Now you will know the correct offset and can change the offset based on the width of wheel you want.

This will help you with changing your widths once you know your offset.
http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Wheel-Offset-Calculator

Some additional information:

The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel."

Zero Offset
The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive
The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheel's centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. Often, when changing the width of the wheel, the offset will also need to change to maintain proper clearances inside the wheel well. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. We test fit thousands of different vehicle and wheel size combinations to confirm which ones work correctly. Our extensive database allows our sales staff to offer you the perfect fit for your vehicle.

This is just about the best deal for custom forged wheels I could find on Ebay. They also make the best looking widebody SL kit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPDV6-17-18-19-20-22-3pc-Forged-Wheels-Mercedes-SL550-SL500-SL55-SL65-1p-/181376358173?hash=item2a3adf971d&vxp=mtr

$750 per wheel is damn good for a forged wheel. Yeah, you have to add lug bolts and tires but that's to be expected. You can easily get wheels, tires, shipping, and lug bolts out the door for another $1,600 to $1,700. HRE's are stupid expensive as are most of the other options out there.
