Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are seeking to deliver a smaller, lighter, more focused mid-engined model to slot between the $370,000 SL 55 AMG and the $1 million SLR in performance and price

$370,000 SL 55 AMG ???? ....more like three times less.

Thats AUD $'s

BTW, it'll cost around 150K GBP, or what you Yanks will pay for a CL65, and teh engines will range from a 540bhp N/A 6.3 AMG V8 to a TT 6,3 with more than 700bhp...

This has been rumoured for some time...it is nice to hear something more "official" and that they are looking at a price point less than the SLR!

6.3 liter engine? Am I missing something? The Gallardo and 360 are supposed to be light racers right?

The Gallardo has a 5 Liter V10, I think that's kind of the limit there for this segment. I'm not sure, someone tell me I've missed something because it seems as if Mercedes knows what they are doing..

Limit?

There is no limit when discussing the displacement of any AMG engine....

In any segment!

Cool!

This P8 seems like it could be very cool. With Daimler's $ and Mac's no how they could produce a real winner (remember the Macca F1). Now if it could approach those performance levels for Gallardo/360 money....WOW! It's a shame we have to wait until '07.

I guess I'll head over to the Merc dealer and start a list!

LOL! I see what you mean, but doesn't that increase weight by a lot?

yeah, but if weight was a concern then we'd all buy Porsches

There would be no reason for the CL65 then, since it weighs 200kg more than an SL55.

the only reason why AMG cars get so heavy is that they have to reinforce vital components to make sure the car can "cope" with all that power and torque. And besides its not like AMG get a lightweight car in the first place! That is why their philosophy is centred around torque low down to get the thing moving! Ever wondered why the SLR is as fast the Zonda CGT or Enzo while being 300kgs heavier? Or the SL55 being as quick as the Gallardo and 911T/Modena while being 400kgs heavier?

TORQUE....I'm sure I don't need to tell you Americans: "there's no replacement for displacement".

Actually its more like: "There's no replacement for an AMG engine!"

i just hope the real thing will look better than the concept though

i don't know about the whole mclaren mercedes partnership. i mean, mercedes does own a part of mclaren, but i think mclaren should not let mercedes affect the designs so much, especially because the two companies focus on different aspects of driving

2008 MERCEDES McLAREN P8

ON SALE: Late 2007
BASE PRICE: $200,000 (est.)
POWERTRAIN: 6.3-liter, 500-hp, 516-lb-ft V8; rwd, seven-speed automatic
CURB WEIGHT: 3000 pounds (est.)
0-60 MPH: 3.9 seconds (est.)

The SLR was just the first shot: Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are beyond planning stages for a mid-engine, V8-powered supercar with sights set on Ferrari’s 360 Modena and Ford’s GT. The project car—though only in its formative stage—has a dedicated group looking into its engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing feasibility, and is codenamed P8. If given approval in the coming months, P8, which would slot between the robust SL65 AMG and the SLR McLaren, could be on the streets testing by late 2006 and in showrooms by late 2007.
