Get this job done by a professional who has experience - and IMPORTANT : Direct access to your car - can work PHYSICALLY on your car!!! Not only over phone or E-Mailing and going back and forth - ahh my plugs are good, ahhh my coils are good - I will repair them by myself.

I agree that the coil packs were old and on their way out any way. The tune was just enough to finish them off. To get 10 years and 60k miles out of the originals is much better than most. You should be counting your blessings that they lasted this long.
The coil packs on my 2007 S600 originally were replaced at only 8k miles in 2009. The replacements at that time were still the original part number. My engine started throwing misfire codes a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be a coil pack. I only have 33k miles. A new coil pack was installed on only 1 bank with the new part number. My SA advised me that the other bank will likely be going out in the next few months. That's just how it goes with those packs. My car runs the same coils and plugs as yours and isn't as stressed since it has less HP and is not driven hard. These coils are wear items, and yours just happened to wear very well. No need to blame EC for this, because your coils were going to go very soon any way. I hope what others have said about the new coils being more reliable and longer lasting than the originals is true.
Regarding you being upset about the resale value of your original coils: Those were basically useless any way. The coils that you see being sold on eBay for $500-800 are rebuilds, not old worn originals. Your old coils will likely have some value to people who rebuild and resell them...so you should be able to get something for them.

Don't buy OEM coil packs, I bought mine from Rock Autos and they were
half the cost of OEM , and they are made in England. Every Merc turbo
I have owned blow the coil pack the minute you re map the engine.

There seems to be a perverse pride in the forums about spending lots on maintenance and repairs. If the repairs cost more than the car, so much the better.
My objective is to spend as little as possible, while still doing the job right. I've had to fix just about everything on mine, and only the coil pack cost more than 100 or 200 or so.
Never again. It will be either RockAuto, MotorKing, or used coil packs for me in future.

Edit: Of course, the area where I haven't been so successful has been in spending as little TIME working on my car as possible. Over three years, I certainly spent more time under it than driving it. Is that as bad as spending more money on maintenance than on the car itself?

Sound. In college, I had a 1962 black Austin Healy MKIII. Other than trying to keep the 3 carburetors in tune, it was a very dependable car. At the same time, my best friend had an MGB with nothing but electrical problems. He ended up getting a VW bug for reliability. But the Italians are the worst! IN the 70's, I drove a Fiat 124 Spyder and that car made the MGB look like the most reliable car made. The Fiat's problems were mostly electrical.

looking to fix your car, how cheap can I get it, will it go better when fixed,

im gonna attempt a repair on my coil packs if this goes to plan the whole process will cost me $190USD. Apparently after doing research , the coil cassettes and the transistor mosfets are what throw the misfire codes on coil packs. Im going to replace cylinder 1,3, 5 coil cassettes $160USD eBay, $30 20 pack of transistor mosfets.
But as I have the coils out of the car and opened I will replace all transistors, By far cheapest best option if this works. If it does work I will definitely be doing a rebuild as soon as the other side fails, But I will replace all coil cassettes this time which is $500USD including transistors for whole kit to rebuild every coil and all transistors.
The most satisfying thing about doing this would be saving a heap of money and accomplishing it without any MB specialists playing God with my car repairs. It also gives me confidence to keep the car , in the event if I face this same issue again down the track at least I know I could fix it in a day, and not have to wait months on end for coil packs to come the US.
Many people I speak to about these cars immediately say "there a good car , but coil packs and ABC", if this idea can be resolved , it will change the perception of how people view the car , ultimately a quick and economical fix will do this as soon as people adopt it. I hope I dont have the ABC problems so as a precaution, flushed all old dirty oil and put new mineral hydraulic fluid in so far so good

update on this thread, rebuilt coil packs did not fix (not sure why) purchased new coil packs both left and right car running perfect with the same spark plugs everyone said to not use :p raced a C63s on weekend, obliterated him to bits I need a good tuner to send me a file, anyone have any suggestions?

No affiliation or special tuning here, and my car runs great. The tune's safety was verified on a dyno and has recently proven itself on the track with additional mods. The risk for greater maintenance and wear and tear exists regardless of the tuner. Extra power is not drive train friendly. Good luck with who ever you choose.
