SL55 Exhaust...
I need to replace both rear mufflers on my SL55. The welds that hold an 'L' bracket let go on both sides. I'm not sure if I want to get the OEM units or try something else.
What do you guys use?

Probably not much help with your particular situation but, I have a CKS Performance x-pipe on my car. It replaces the secondary cats and first set of mufflers. Sounds absolutely awesome. Not overly loud but people comment on the sound all the time and usually with a question.... That's not stock is it? Pretty noticeable it's not stock when the revs get up a lil!

Some previous owner of my 2003 sl55 had some renntech upgrades done including renntech mufflers (with tips) installed. They sounded great . They appear to have been made by Sebring (the same company that made the OE AMG mugglers for the sl55) .
Cheers,

i went with Carlsson. deeper tone than stock. there's some on ebay, but be careful about the tips. i went with the big ovals and had to replace the rear diffuser because the tips were too large for the stock one

Do you like the stock exhaust note, or want it louder?
If you like how it sounds as-is, you're probably best off replacing rhe mufflers with factory units
Before you do that, have you tried having a muffler shop repair/weld the brackets back on?
My SL55 had the same problem, but on one side. It didn't fully shear off but was cracked and allowed the muffler to sag and move slightly. I propped the muffler into the proper position and welded the hanger back on. This was two years ago, has been fine since

I am fine with the stock sound. The brackets had sheared off, but were still there. I took the car over to Midas, after they told me they had a great welder who would knock it out in an hour.
Their welder proclaimed that it wasn't fixable. I went to take it elsewhere, but they forgot to give me the 'L' brackets back. When went back to retrieve them, they had tossed them. I'm a tad irritated as this should be an easy fix.

After explaining to this old codger with tobacco juice coming out the side of his mouth why I was driving one of them damned kraut cars, we put the car on the lift and he went to welding. That was 4 years ago and god knows how many pot holes hit since then, but the weld looks as good today as the day he did it.

I was going to mention welding the bracket back because I had exactly the same issue. Went to Midas and they said "know way dude, can't be done." A friend of mine told me to go to some mom and pop muffler shop that is used to doing everything possible to save exhaust systems for old beat up cars. He said these muffler guys become masters at welding and are willing to give almost anything a try. I figured i had nothing to lose.

There are normally good pairs of sl55 mufflers on eBay if you don't want to bother fixing yours. I noticed the tips are slightly different on newer versions (the chrome shroud of the tip just extends further back to muffler on outer edges, I suppose so when the system is hot and lengthens you don't see the back edge of the exhaust tip from sides)

My SL55 has no cats just the 2 pairs of OEM resonators. I call them this because they are straight through as in I can poke a stick straight through them. My car idles at a not too loud 86db however with the Eurocharged stage 3 kit (shorty headers), it sounds like a fueler when on the gas. I would much prefer the thrust without nearly as much noise. What have others done with a no cat set-up? The cats muffle hugely, and is why the OEM resonators don't do much.
