Pulley Installation Problem

Hi guys - this is my first post here.. so please excuse if this is a dumb question.

I recently purchased the tuning package from Eurocharged for my 2006 SL55, after what looked like generally good feedback here on the boards. During the tuning process, when I went to restart my car, the bearing on the supercharger pulley failed on the very first time starting the car, after what turned out to be an unsuccessful flash of the performance tune file onto my car.

I was suspicious that maybe something about the failed flash caused what sounded like an asynchronous and disjointed start, and subsequent bearing failure. Although, I'm not that mechanically savvy, so I have no idea why this would be so. Regardless, I chalked it up to a bad coincidence.

So last week I ordered the 83mm pulley from Eurocharged, and I when attempting to install it this morning, I've had a little trouble. The nut was difficult to break loose, but I finally got it, after heating it with a hair dryer. Upon sliding the old pulley off, and trying to slide the new one on, the new pulley got stuck and would not advance down the metal shaft. I was able to pry it off, but not without some effort. I thought maybe I had inadvertently heated the metal shaft in the process of taking out the nut, so I let the car sit outside (40 degrees) for about an hour to cool down. I just went out again to try and slide the new pulley on, but again, it got stuck after about 1-2mm. I'm doing my best to slide it on evenly, but it seems significantly tighter than the one I just took off. It's to the point where I literally cant push it on... and I don't want to force it and hurt the bearing. It was a really difficult to pull off again. Am I suppose to be putting some type of grease on here to lubricate it?.. or could anyone offer any assistance on what I may be doing wrong? It seems I can make even the simplest of repairs difficult lol
Thanks - Jim

If I was working on it, I would sand the shaft and inside the pulley with lite sandpaper, like 1200 and clean them with wd40 etc, and make sure they are both perfect then try again
(maybe heat the pulley in the oven a little)

I appreciate that reply Okbarnett.

I had the same idea of sanding the shaft, but I wasn't sure if it was "okay" to do. But if you think so too.. then I guess it makes sense. I did try warming the pulley slightly this afternoon, but that still didn't seem to be enough. Tomorrow I'll try sanding lightly with some fine grit paper, and see if that does the trick.

Thanks again man!

thats normal, dont sand it. Even if you tried to install the stock pulley it will stuck also.

Just try to wiggle/push it or hit it gently with a rubber hammer and then it will slide in smoothly. You can lubricate the shaft its fine.

Thanks mAMG for the reply as well. I was going to go sand it this morning, but why do you say not to? I'm worried I might scratch or mar the bearing if it's this difficult to slide on. Also, how does one pound the pulley on with a rubber hammer, with this fan shroud in place.. it doesn't seem like there's much room to do so.. at least from a straight angle. I feel like sanding a bit would make the process much easier. Is there an actual reason why this would be not advised.. assuming i just do it very lightly with 1000/2000 paper? Thanks for the help guys. Jim

my mechanic used to lift the engine a little bit.
About sanding, i guess its not the right way the factory/dealer would install it .. I changed the pulley from stock to 83mm couple of times and it stucks every time and the mechanic never sanded the shaft ..

Install a scatter shield as well because these aftermarket pullies will fail after a while.

Thanks again for the advice.

I sanded very lightly with 2000 grit, heated up the pulley a little bit, and was able to tap it on lightly with a piece of wood. Now I think I'll just wait for Monday for Eurocharged to open, to make sure I it gets tuned without any hiccups.

Have a good rest of the weekend guys!

by sanding it you are just taking any surface imperfection or corrosion, etc off of it. to make it perfect. maybe its not visible but for tight tolerances its what you cant see that makes the difference
