Sl55 intank fuel pump FAILED. Need insight.

So to keep a long story short,

I drove my newly purchased SL55 into a shell gas station, pumped the tank full and got about 5 feet away from the pump before the car died.

Narrowed down the problem to the fuel ounp fuse being blown. I quickly replaced the fuse and had it blow again on contact. I towed the car to my buddies shop and began troubleshooting.

I replaced the in line fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay and then finally the fuse. NADA, same result of blow fuse. STAR told us the fuel pump module was shot. Ordered from Germany oem and replaced it. Still zip.

So after searching diagrams, we saw the tank has a intank pump. We found the relay for it and disconnected. The car started but ran like S**t. We shut everything down and came to realize we f**ked up and should have did our homework first.

Now my question becomes, how do I go about removing and replacing this pump. Is it married to the tank? Can I even find a replacement. Do I even need amother pump in the tank and what is it's function.

Thanks in advance guys.

The fuel system has a fuel pump 001 470 65 94;a pump control unit 000 900 80 09 and a pressure sensor 003 542 48 18 all external to the fuel tank.

What is the real problem??

But than why are there 2 fuel pump relays?

And the car starts up and doesn't throw any codes on start any longer, just runs like poop.

And blows the fuse still right on contact

This is the relay I unplugged from my rear sam to get the car to turn over and lift up.

So I'm almost sure there is an in tank pump. Am I the only r230 amg that's gone through this?

The tank just gravity feeds to the big pump on the bottom.

If it's blowing the fuse on contact, check your wiring.

Check for good clean voltage and ground coming to the pump. It's possible your failing pump drew too much amperage and damaged some wiring somewhere.

I have had a similar journey with my 2003 sl55amg, yes this car has a 1 of a kind fuel tank with an internal pump, which you can buy! But the tank needs to be cut to be fitted. And it has the external pumps.
after spending thousands with so called sl55 specialists and fitting a new factory fuel tank, lines filters and relay and fuses, the car started and ran for perhaps 30 miles before cutting out without warning!
incidentally the car will sit and idle for hours.
I have found out that there is an electrical module which is bolted to the rear chassis, this apparently feeds the fuel pumps so pressure is kept up.
Ill get the part number and share it,hopefully will solve your problem with less pain than ive had.
I will try and find the pump details, you will have to find a specialist to repair and reseal the tank,I will be selling mine.
