alternative charge cooler mod

Although there are a number of larger charge cooler's available , has anyone investigated simply adding a few litres of extra capacity in the cooler circuit to reduce average IAT's. ?

eg: via an inline alloy tank, eg:
overflow tank

In my mind, doubling the capacity would mean you have on tap more pre- cooled fluid rather than waiting for it to circulate through the charge cooler.

Obviously if you were doing continued high speed runs, even double the capacity would eventually saturate at a higher temperature but for average driving with spirited bursts this seems to have some merits.
Low cost and easy to fit ( behind the bumper next to the coolant pumps, also a cool area )

Or am I missing something ?

this have 1.5 liter cooling fluid .... and the reservoir about 0,5 l. more or less ... and the extra HE holds 1 l. .... the original I am not sure about but can tell you later ....

some very nice engineering work on that thread amok55amg ! I do like your ACU . Actually a better idea than a tank since I would imagine less flow resistance through the large diameter pipes you have used.

Thanks - my ACU is actually working fine and I am pleased with it ... can show you the result before some weeks from now but my car is running nicely ..... love my new sound and the enormous power ... still a bit to go yet ..... this could be interesting for you: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...ic-inside.html

I have added some capacity to the supercharger coolant circuit and at the same time done the split cooling mod. The IAT's are now slower to rise and quicker to fall.

I originally tried to datalog the results with thermocouples in the coolant lines, but unfortunately couldn't get a good seal once the thermocouple was running between the connector and the hose.

My original plan was to add several litres of extra fluid , but without getting the bumper off there didn't seem a suitable place for such a volume. I actually tried something that was really easy to fit and can be done entirely from the top of the car, no crawling around underneath the car !

I have added just under 0.5.litre which although doesn't sound much, it could be a conservative 25% increase in capacity based on an existing volume of ~ 2L. This capacity increase is done by simply removing the grill and inserting a 2m length of hose in series with the factory heat exchanger. This 2m loops nicely round the outside of the rads obscuring very little air flow. This also has the advantage of a volume of coolant sitting in the cold part of the engine bay.

** For continued high speed runs, drag runs etc... I am absolutely not saying this would replace any large remote tanks, killer chiller, large heat exchangers etc ... but along with split cooling for a basic cooling mod I'm pleased with the results.

I seperated the cooling system and it helped. Put on a large intercooler and lowered the temp by 55 degrees. Only way to go

Larger intercooler or larger heat exchanger?

Its a way to go, its not the only way.

I shared my option which was an easy low cost option with a smaller benefit.
