Importing from "out of state" into Calif.????

Hey all, How much trouble is it to say, buy an SL63 from a dealership in Colorado (or anywhere else) and registering it in California?

Am I asking for a major headache?

Thx, Vic

Most modern cars are fine state to state. Only issue is if the car is modded, then some states are less strict than others and a car that is ok in some states may not pass smog requirements in California.

I'd only be worried about your smog test in Cali if its a modded car.

Otherwise no issues really, it works just like buying any car in your state.

Correct. As long as you can pass in-state smog test you should be fine. If you don't have cats or have a CEL then you will have problems.

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
I live in SoCal and have purchased 4 MB’s from out of state sellers (one MB dealer and 3 other brand dealers.) all were previously titled for at least 6 months. The process is painless, just buy the car and arrange for shipping. You will need the out of state title to get a Ca title. My most recent purchase out of state was a 10 month old S65. It took about 3 weeks for the newly issued Ohio title to show up.I got the Ohio sales tax confirmation direct from the dealer, Ca credits that payment against the Ca rate. I am not sure how this title and tax process works for a brand new car. Get the car smog tested and take the car, the title and the smog paperwork to your closest AAA office. If you are not a AAA member, join. The entire process takes 15 minutes at a AAA office, far far preferable than dealing with the DMV. All MB’s are 50 state cars for emissions purposes, the confirmation decal is under the hood.

Question. So, I take it that MB cars sold in non-California States are the same Smog Equipped cars as those sold in California? I was concerned about having to retrofit an out-of-state car for registration in Calif.

All MB’s are 50 state cars, no retrofits or mods required for Ca registration.
