I've been looking at a 2007 P030 black on black, 32K miles and he's asking $30,000. It's been for sale for months, it's on FB marketplace, not sure if 42K is going to be had esp during this pandemic

Not my car just helping a friend, but based on what the market was doing on BaT the price is close to fair.

Unfortunately, BaT isn’t the real world when it comes to these cars unless he does the work to actually get it on there, monitor the auction, and be proactive with all comments and questions.
It’s all about presentation with BaT. Good cars might not do well with no preparation and lousy photos. You’ll get crucified with comments and lack of meaningful bidders. On the other hand, I’ve seen bone-stock, average first-year SL55s pushing $30K all because of a clean presentation and engaged seller.

Meadows is right on about the Bat thing, really not representative of the market. A good place to visit to see cars and pick up info from knowledeable dealers (who by the way band together frequently with commentary to appeal to emotion and push up the bid price) but genereally not a place to "buy at market".
I paid less than $30k for a black 08, 2 owner car that had 28K miles, original paint and all service records, With 2 minor exceptions the car is flawless.
Since 07 and 08 model years are significantly more desirable (ABC system fixes, etc..) and the P30 package will obtain maybe a $5k premium with the right buyer, I suggest your friend recalibrate to mid-30's as a "top" selling price, but be ready to negotiate.
Just my $.02.

BaT is a bubble, not representative of the real world. Pretty much like any other collector car auction, emotion is what drives some of the inflated values. Having tried and failed to sell both my S8 and RX7 there, it's also a real hassle. They will squeeze you for a low reserve and it's a 2+ month wait in most cases. Ignorance is bliss, many people buy sight unseen expecting the comments to bring out the issues based only on photos. I think my two cars were a no-sale because I provided an abundance of information that otherwise wouldn't have been known from just the pics, you know being honest.
I'm a serious R230 AMG shopper, but have to say that $42k is incredibly optimistic. Really nice car but that seems like way too much money.

I’ve sold two cars this year on BaT, both at No Reserve, including an R230. Both did extremely well. I made it a point to provide tons of documentation. I strongly believe that’s what promulgated the success of both sales. I wasn’t afraid of having no reserve because the community is large enough to prevent good cars from getting stolen.

On BaT, sellers typically only pay a $99 listing fee. Buyers pay 5% of the final sale price, min of $250 and max of $5k, to BaT. In your example, the seller pays $99 to list the car. The buyer pays $2,000 to BaT and $40k to the seller.

I don't even wanna know, that's why i buy from private sellers so they don't hit me with any fees. My state you pay tax when you register the car, then every single year you have to pay that tax again until you sell it.
