UPD 83mm S/C Pulley & RaceIQ Tune

Anybody have experience with these? I’m looking for a mild, reliable tune, and can get this package for @ $650. I’m already prepping to upgrade to a Bosch 010 pump. Please opine. Thanks!!!

Good move on the upgraded Bosch pump.

Just ordered a UPD 77mm SCP w/ a EC tune for my S55. You'll also need a belt wrap kit.

I was on the fence between the 77mm from UPD and the 80mm from VRP (interesting middle ground between a 76/77 and the 83). Ultimately chose the 77mm because the S (SL as well) comes with better cooling from the factory and the 77mm will squeeze the most power out w/o compromising drive-ability.

RaceIQ has a good reputation but I chose Eurocharged because a) they have a more extensive track record on the platform and b) are recommended by UPD/bundled with their pulley.

Thanks so much for the prompt response. I was hoping to keep my stock belt since there’s only a 7mm difference between pulleys, the tensioner is pulling strong and the belt is new. Do you think I will really experience much slip? I’m (mostly) not an overly aggressive driver.

No problem! I went with the BWK for the extra protection, which comes into play not so much for normal driving but rather for when you get on it. If $300 and a simple install means the risk of belt slip is substantially reduced, well worth it IMHO.

Thanks again. A BWK will probably be my next “mild” mod after everything else gets installed. The pulley’s supposed to come today. Now I’m paranoid about the gap, which I’m told is supposed to be @ .030.

There are shims used in the stock setup and an additional one in the UPD kit. Use a feeler gauge to determine the stock gap and match it up as close as possible with the new pulley.

Good visual and explanation in this video:

83mm do you even notice the gains? I'd go 77mm as someone mentioned earlier, you don't need a belt wrap kit, just get a smaller belt. Look tavarish's video on Youtube he has the part number for that belt that he used

Good question. I was going for a mild tune since I had to replace my factory pulley anyway. The rivets on the backing plate stretched a little, creating an annoying rattle. I figure between the 83mm pulley, Stage 2 RaceIQ tune and upgraded Bosch 010 IC pump, it should be good for around 50hp. Not bad for under $800.

I don't own an SL55 but with the 83mm pulley and Eurocharged tune I put down 453hp and 512tq to the wheels. Details here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w219/7351...ld-thread.html

Update: Installed the new Bosch 010 pump, UPD 83mm pulley and RaceIQ Stage 2 tune today. Took it out for a shakedown. I nearly crapped my pants. I wouldn’t want any more power than this.

You'll get bored of that soon and next thing you know the next pulley you put on there is the size of a cheerio . Go get it dyno'ed, i'm curious to see what you're putting down with that huge pulley.

Given that I live in the suburbs, don’t track it and really don’t drive on the highway much, I just don’t see where I’m going to feel the need for more. I suppose the taste for speed evolves. Luckily, there are many more options, including smaller S/C pulleys, crank pulleys, etc. I don’t know of any local dynos, but am curious myself.

I have an 83 SC, eurocharged tune, eisenmann race exhaust. I am overall happy with it, if I could go back I probably would have gone with a 77.

I did Add a PLM XL HE in addition to the stock one so cooling shouldn’t be an issue

Thanks for sharing. All other things being equal, I wonder what the differences are between these tunes, such as from Eurocharged, RaceIQ, RENNtech, VRP, Turner, etc. Anyone have insight?

I sure would like to know who pulled my post regarding my blown engine (image on the post) with an 83 mm pulley and tune? I did not name the tuner as the tune was brilliant for 2 years and 20k km before it holed a cylinder.

Double check that pulley often

I experience rapidly increased wear with that pulley and it ruined the friction plate on the charger due to the inability to space it properly as it wore. They are machined wrong and I’ve never seen a mention of a fix beyond remachining it which has been done. Effectively the bearing depth is incorrect and the pulley would have to be machined. This is not my opinion. It’s math. Mine installed to the correct gap without spacers so how could I remove. The stock pulley still required spacers at that time.

This poor machining has nothing to do with spacers and can not be fixed with spacers as material needs to be removed with wear in this instance, not added.

ymmv but watch the wear of the space/gap closely. As the space increases which it will, remove spacers to keep the gap right and then when no more spacers to remove, look for a new supercharger cause the friction plate is toast. I wore mine out in 30k miles and then sold the car with three pulleys, none of which would work at that point, even one being brand new.

I believe this is only an issue with the manufacturer of the upd pulley though if you buy any other brand, check to make sure it’s not actually from the same manufacturer.

I realized the risk when modding. I never asked for a dime for these issues. I just wish this exact information existed when I considered a upd pulley for my 04 e55.

Thanks for the input. My Indy (MB, M113k specialist) installed the pulley because I couldn’t get the bolt loose. They’ve installed many pulleys, and said the UPD went in fine and used the additional spacer that came with the kit to maintain the proper gap range of .035-.045. I’ll keep an eye on it.

Please again, I do not believe the tune was at fault. How would a tune go bad, it is a digital file which does not change without human intervention. Bad tank of fuel? But then why didn't the ECU pull the timing if it was detecting knock? Low fuel rail pressure? But again, why did the ECU not protect? Expert opinions please?
Cheers.

My newly installed pulley with the UPD shim is gapped at .012, which both my Indy and UPD said is just fine. Interesting that it doesn’t fall within the .035-.045 recommendation.

what do you mean when you say addition to stock? Can you give more detail?

I have a 04 e55 and i am going to order the PLM XL HE. How did you incorporate with stock?
