Should check to see if Kleemann has an LSD for the SL65 which should help control all that torque from the onset and provide even better 1/4 results. Possibly shave off about .5 sec or more on the 1/4 mile.

> with the BFG drag radial @ 14-17psi and a nice sized burnout you shouldn't
> have any problem at all getting traction, easily cutting 1.6 60' times

That has been my experience. In my S600, the protocol is as follows:

Stock rear rims with 265/40-18 BFG g-force drag radials @ 20 PSI (warm).

Drive around water box, then back in. Roll forward until just out of waterbox.

ESP OFF. Press brake with left foot, medium-hard. Press gas with right foot until rear wheels start spinning. Wait until there's smoke on both sides (3-5 seconds). Release brake, then gas once car has moved forward a bit.

Stage. ESP still OFF. Press brake HARD with left foot. Floor gas on the 2nd yellow, release brake on the 3rd yellow.

Result: 1.62 - 1.66 60's, no wheelspin. 11.58 - 11.7 @ 120 1/4 miles.

> Should check to see if Kleemann has an LSD for the SL65

The SL65 already has an LSD. If you turn off ESP, it leaves two nice looong black stripes behind it. Even God's own LSD wouldn't knock a half-second off the 1/4 mile from where the SL65 starts - you need Lucifer's drag radials for that

FWIW, I'll be at Sacramento Raceway this Saturday to try out my new BFG G-force drag radials on the SL65...

You're nuts, Treynor. Good for you. Let me know how you do at the drag strip.

Treynor,

What great reading. The SL65 is my dream, or a E65.
I though 19 inch were stock on an SL65?
With ESP off, you can floor it without wheel spin?

The stock wheels on the SL65 are 19". Luke @ Tire Rack hooked me up with a pair of 18" SL600 rear wheels & BFG 275/35-18 drag radials - they fit on the back of the SL65 without a problem.

Stock, my SL65 will light up both rear tires with ESP off. I don't even bother driving around with it disengaged - the car's quicker if you let the computer manage traction.

Sadly, it had rained only 36 hours earlier, and the track was in horrible shape. Rubber was peeling off the launch area in chunks, and traction was not to be had for love 'nor money, even with 19PSI in my drag radials. I ran 11.8 - 12.0 @ low-120s, spinning all the way through first. After about 10 passes I eventually gave up in disgust and went home early.

Hi Everyone, To follow on Treynor's post, I was also at Sacramento raceway on Saturday and saw Treynor's SL65 make several passes down the strip. It was very clear that there was no traction available at all (*especially on the right lane*) at the track. Even the full slick dragsters could not fully hook up on the left lane and there was a twin turbo Buick GN that actually started pulling pieces of the track up and spitting them out like i've never seen before.

In either case, it was still very impressive to see the Silver Arrow run consistent low 12's and also a few high 11's. I could hear Treynor modulating the throttle through 1st gear to try to stop the wheel spin to no avail. I told Ben that i could actually see the car start to break loose when it hit shifted from 1st to 2nd gear, but from that point on it was all major speed.

Even the non-Mercedes fans out there were asking "what was that car that ran 11.80" and "oh ****, look at the numbers that silver Mercedes posted"

Below is one of the pictures i took at the raceway. Hopefully you'll all enjoy seeing the juxtaposition of the modern "super" muscle in line with some of the classic muscle cars.

Ben - I'm looking forward to the next round of test and tune and this time i'll be sure to bring the video camera to capture some live action.

I was wondering where you went after that last run, but then i figured you must have bailed on the track since it was not giving back any love.

Cheers,
Tony

man, i wonder what kind of numbers it would get on a good track in good conditions with drag radials. that sounds like a super ghetto drag strip. oh well keep us posted

treynor,

Why did you put 18's on you SL65 if it is not as wide as the 19's?

I don't think they make BFG Drag radials for 19" wheels yet. Also, I believe that optimizing traction with the 18" wheels and drag radials surpasses the same for 19" even if they were available since there is greater sidewall for hook-up with the 18's. More insight anyone?

There is no problem with driving with drag radials on the road right? If so how does the handling and steering response of the car compare with normal tyres, better or worse?

Tony - thanks for the support and the great pics! I look forward to going back and getting this machine to hook up and post some good numbers.

And yes, the 18" BFGs stick *much* better in a straight line than do the stock tires, despite their slighly smaller width.

You can drive drag radials on the road with no problem. I would highly recommend that you don't drive in the rain with drags because from what I hear you are very prone to hydroplaning. Just my 2 cents...

I drive with Drag Radial on car all the time. I will never drive car with out them. I get them for $130 so I replace when needed. I almost put on the KD instead but was worried I would be bumed with tire spin. The Drag once warm hook up. No tire spin with the E55

He's gotta be rolling around on BFG g force t/a drag radials 275/35/18. They are terrible when it's wet, but hook very well when dry.

Ok thanks. Apart from grip, how does handling and steering response/feel compare with normal tyres?

BFG's aren't very good for any sort of handling. For the street The Nitto 555r drag radial is a much better tire. It handles well and has great steering response. It doesn't get quite as good strait line traction, but is a better all around tire.

Car is so heavy on the street anyway. It will take a month or so for you to build up the confidence in the Drag tires. When first got felt like gum ***** in back but they stick better even in turns. I have never slid car out! NEVER. When they are warm they hook! hook! hook! And looks intimidating to others as well. Big fat slicks in the back.

Yes I can get others the same deal. I have a friend at a tire store in the OC but still at tire rack they are only $190 and you only need 2 for the rear. So $380 or $260 What ever? But yes if it is worth the hassle I can get for who ever. He will install fro $5 for all 4 as well. Remember Cash, Grass, Gas.

What track are these runs at? I know its a pretty late post but this thread was linked to an earlier one. I've seen lots of vids from this track and I'm curious where it is.

treynor, have you ever thought of just bypassing internal combustion engine and just coverting to rocket power? Seems like thats the only route left for you get go any faster. just a thought
