SL55 2003. Gear Position Detector
I have a 2003 SL55 and I'm looking to buy 'NEW' Gear Position Selector / Detector. Fault Code P1856. Many second hand or options to buy the whole gear shifter unit but just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

A common cause for code P1856 is faulty/"cold" solder joints for the optical sensors in the shifter module. If you have basic soldering skills and a decent soldering iron with a fine tip, it's an easy DIY repair. Otherwise, any electronics repair shop can do it if you bring the circuit board to them.
Mercedes Shifter Module Internal Repair
This poor soldering is basically a manufacturing defect, so it's likely that any replacement, new or used, will eventually have the same problem. The more certain fix is to properly re-solder these joints.

Hopefully you can fix your existing floor shifter. BUT, IF you do end up replacing it, keep in mind that the Steering wheel shift option MUST be coded when a new floor shifter is first added to the car. Once you have put miles on it, you will no longer have that option ... AND, if you get a used floor shifter it must be from a 2003-2006 SL55/SL65 (if not, it wont have been coded properly and can never support steering wheel shift buttons).
