Renntech Vs. Kleemann

My first question is about the 6000 and change ECU upgrade from both companies. Is either one any better than the other and is it something that is very noticable and not just because you spent 6k but because you have seen it on the dyno or in your times.
My second question is that from what I have been reading for the same money the 600 can be upgraded about 80hp over the 55. Will this upgraded 600 smoke the 55 or is this BS? I like the way the 55 looks and sounds better than the 600 but for the same money, which is better?

The Kleemann one is cooler.

The SL55 and SL600 (w. sport package) look exactly the same with the exception of the rear tail lamps which can be bought (considering you also drive a Red Label, I don't think the price of the lamps will mean anything)

If I were you, I'd go fo the SL600 for the V12, get a rougher exhaust, the AMG tail lamps, and some Kleemann engine mods.

Is the only difference (looks wise) between the 600sport and the 55 the exhaust and tail lights and wheels or is there more? I guess I would have to go drive a 600. Until now I thought the 55 was much sportier and the 600 was the old mans SL but not sure any more.

new balance
Jeff,

I drove both back to back at Euro...the 600 is very quiet, too quiet for my tastes, the AMG steering wheel and seats gave the CL55 a sportier feel and the exhaust note was far superior, made it feel "faster", just my .02.

Is that a simple exhaust swich to solve the problem? I am thinking in stock form the 55 is better for me but with the ECU upgrade on paper it looks like the 600 is a monster. Could just be marketing, I am sure someone will chime in with real world experience. I have heard plenty of mixed info regarding ECU upgrades with other makes but I haven't been up on benzes.

The data on this topic is unambiguous. The 600-series cars will smoke their 55-series equivalent in a straight line. Although Mercedes rates them at the same HP stock, the TT V12s make ~50 RWHP more than the SC V8s -- and then there's all that extra midrange torque.

The '55 series cars may FEEL faster, but they're not

So it it really 50rwhp? That would make sense given the engine architecture although I had believed that it was 50hp crank with the 590ft-lbs max and torque spread which truly made the acceleration difference.

Anyways, AMGs have many exclusive features including the AMG hand-built V-8 along with mostly aesthetic (dials, seats, instrument cluster alcantara, door sills, all of the external AMG features as well) that cannot be fully duplicated or offered by the SL600. I preferred the SL55 AMG in comparison to the SL600 having driven both. The SL55 AMG is more of the hotrod in exhaust sound and V-8 super-charged characteristics rather than the executive jet type V12TT in the SL600 and the less responsive 5-speed auto.

Don't forget that the SL55 AMG weighs less than the SL600 by ~200lbs and has the more performance-oriented AMG speedshift shift (trans logic and F1-type button shifting) which can make up the 0-60MPH difference. Above 60mph, I'd have to say that the SL600 has the edge along with the mid-range torque for passing. Subtle but significant stock vs. stock. Go drive both for the best experience and give us your own, objective impressions!

Heh. I've driven an SL55 and an SL65, and I can say without bias that the SL65 is faster

My S600 is also faster than the SL55, however.

Hehe, I know you have Treynor! I was just commenting on the SL600 torque in reference to your quote. I actually meant the objective drive comparison of the SL600 vs. SL55 for Jeff here who was asking the questions. I should have addressed him.
