Integrated Radar Detector

Does anyone know of a shop that can do this kind of custom radar detector install w/ the display incorporated into the mirror in Southern California?

It's designed by AI Design in New York and I have yet to find anything that even resembles it out here...

Very nice!

Have you considered sending the car to NY to have it done?

Perhaps West Coast Customs or 310 could make something comparable for you?

I think I'm going to get them to make the parts and have it installed here somewhere. Pretty nice indeed!

Very, very nice. Too bad that radar detectors are illegal in the Netherlands. The police have the right (besides fining your trunks off) to confiscate the radar-detection unit on the spot (which they do). Probably meaning they'll use a can-opener to remove something as integrated as this.

I was in NY a few months ago on business and stopped by AI and met Matt and looked at his shop. A first class operation for custom work. He will be doing my V1/K40 system in a few months. Very clean and integrated into your car. I love the etched V1 display on the mirror

Will you be sending you car up or will he be making the parts and sending them down to you?

Not sure what you mean by "designed by AI". There are other places doing the etched mirror. I had mine done by Technik 1 in NYC. There is also a place in NJ, can't remember their name. Each place seems to have their own "flavor" to the install. Do a search here, T-bone has posted pics of my install before.

I feel that 80% of this type of system is the installation and the experience of the installer since we are aiming for the best solution that allows a total stealth integration into your stock interior. Every cars install could be different, my E55 since I do not have the Parktronic option, will use that area of the console as the switch for the on/off for the system. Will look very clean and will not take up any new space

Since I live MD and NY is not to far, my car will be going to Matt either by transport or driving it myself. If I lived far, I would transport the car and have them do what they do best, custom work.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I hear you... I'm in New York later this week so I'm going to go and speak with them. Not sure shipping my SL55 from LA to NYC is worth it... but maybe?!

You may also want to speak to Technik 1 while you're in the city. Someone else here asked for someone in CA to do this. Gus at Technik 1 gave me someone in CA but I forget their name. Maybe give him a call and ask for a CA installer? Tell him Chris w/ the E55 told you to call.

It would make a nice road trip if you were up to that. And take into account that on the way back you could drive very fast because you're protected by the radar/laser shield :v

If you don’t want to ship it, I’ll drive it for you, both ways, out of my pocket.
If you would rather entrust it with a follow car nut, I am serious. As long as it is not the end of this month/begging on Feb.

But first I would check with West Coast Customs and 310 Motoring, they are both A LOT closer to you than NY.

PS. The last part of post #14 might have influenced my offer

Not really applicable to a group buy. Getting the V1/lidatek (in my case) is the easy part. It's the install that counts. And for this you're paying for the particular shops expertise in custom install.

.........the integration of the radar dector in a stealth manner into the rear view mirror has been available for a while. It can be done by Hifi Buys/Tweeter company. I have this on my CLK32, 300CE and G55. At Hifi/buys, they use the passport SRX or the SR7 with ZR3. You do not need to ship your car to NYC.

I believe the actual sensor is mounted in the bulb in the rear of the SL with the display etched into the mirror... I have seen stealth enclosures before, some with lights in the vents or incorporated in the dash, but none with a directional display in the mirror. I believe the Valentine is selected because it's upgradeable - but please don't quote me on that.

.........yes the sensors and radar jammers and laser jammers are mounted both in front and the rear of the car. The display is taken apart and the rear view mirror is taken apart aswell. The rear vie mirror is then scratched out exactly the same dimension as what ever you wish to display from the radar detector. This way, if you radar detector has directional arrows, you can display them if you like. The Passport SRX does not have diectional arrows but has displays on my rear view mirror saying rear laser jamming or front laser jamming depending on whether I get hit from the front or from the rear.

Now please tell me you're in SoCal!

Thanks for the info. I'm still in the exploration phase so I do appreciate your input.

I called the company in NY for information, and what I got is that the rear-view mirror install is about $750 and volume control kit $150. Add on top of that a K40, or whatever you would be using.

...........I am not in CA. The install can be done by HiFi Buys/Tweeter company in your area. The passport SR7 with ZR3 costs $2100 installed.

FYI, I spoke to Don at AI today. Very nice guy. Yes, his mirrors are specific to the V1 system, but said he would accommodate me given that I already have a K40 system installed. I'd send my mirror to him, it would take him 24 hours to do the etching/install for the K40 emmitters and I'd have it back the next day. My K40 LED's are already integrated into the top vent (see below), but this next level of stealth is way out front.

I spoke to my installer (So. Cal) and he says he can handle the changeout/hookup with no problem. I could actually end up with two sets of emmitters, if I choose, both in the vent and the mirror.

Don said the cost to do my existing mirror was about $900. Expensive, but very cool.
