Theft or worse...

Hi,

I know this isn't a very happy subject, but I was wondering if any of you ever worry about theft or carjacking? And if so what things do you do to prevent such an unfortunate event? I clearly don't want to give anybody lurking here any ideas, so don't be too specific (!) on the subject or your personal situation.

I know that stealing a recent Mercedes without a key requires a trailer. And I know not to leave keys around. And in the US at least, you can shoot an aspiring carjacker out of your car with a legal semi automatic, which will make pirates think twice about jacking a car. However here guns are out of the question... And I know about GPS/Cell phone alarm/tracking systems. But is there more?

I found few sporadic theft stories on the forums (one London guy with very bad luck) but nothing major. An no stories about recovering a stolen car.

Honestly, I don't worry about it. It's just a car. I lock the doors when I leave it somewhere, and try not to leave anything of value just sitting out in plain view, but that is as far as I go. Just IMHO.

I'm the same way. Come the end of the day I'm insured... If someone was to carjack me the only concern I'd have is my personal safety. I also would think that most SL55 owners live in pretty safe and secure areas. I often leave my car unlocked or with the top down when I'm parking locally for short stretches of time.

I would like to think that with the exception of a select few who have ther priorities all mixed up, most benz owners whether they drive an SL or a C would live ir relatively safe and secure areas. You are right though about being insured. The is, afterall, why we pay some of the highest insurance rates for our cars...peace of mind.

I have been driving some pretty conspicuous cars for quite some time and I have never had a problem. The Merc is pretty low profile for me!

Having said that, whenever I am on a long trip I always carry a hand gun with me. I once got stopped in Reno (for no apparent reason other than I was driving a Ferrari) and the cop asked me if I had any weapons. When I told him yes...he immediately got defensive and wanted to know why. When I said to him ....."If you were driving through the desert, in this car....would you want a gun?" He smiled, nodded and told me to have a nice evening...and be careful!!

Along the same subject, and along the lines of Lojack, is there any company who makes a GPS transmitter that the owner himself can track? For example, if my car is stolen and i want to track it by turning on the GPS transmitter that i installed or left in the car. Basically getting rid of the middleman, Lojack.

I know there are systems that alow you to 'request' GPS coordinates from the car via e.g. SMS resulting in a reply SMS with exact GPS location that is translated to an actual direction by some sort of navigation software. Don't know who makes it though, and if it's available overseas.

Also handy to track your wifes whereabouts Just kidding!

B.t.w. I think that Lojack i.c.w. the police aren't the worst middleman you could have.

It's really a neat car! Technology has moved on so much that the SL isn't that much slower....but the F40 is still pretty amazing....and it will probably hold its value just a bit better than the SL...

I think everyone here is forgetting about the handy TeleAid SOS system pre-installed with your cars, including AMG models. TeleAid has the capability to locate and track down the location of your vehicle (even when stolen). Just report to them your situation and they'll be on their search for your particular vehicle.

Of course, no one wants their car stolen or broke into in the first place, but we can be assured.

Your car is a much better weapon than anything anyone could ever pull on you.

Much more worried about someone dinging my doors, or crashing into my parked car than theft. I saw the entire side of a parked C240 smashed the other day in the city from some dummy who couldn't drive straight down a street. Gets me sick

I forgot about that option. Unfortunately it is not available here (NL).

No i didnt froget about the TeleAid. I just see so many shows and movies where they track people with a little handheld PC by using GPS. Any boat can have GPS. Why should anyone have to pay monthly for Lojack or TeleAid when the owner can do it themselves? The reason i asked is not just for my SL5, but for any of my cars. Also, trips by boat to the Bahamas from Miami are a blast. The only thing that keeps me up at night is when i hear about boats getting ripped off from the hotel's pier in the middle of the night. My own GPS would give me piece of mind.
