Ready to buy a preowned 2014 SL63 and checking in for advice

Hi,
I am a new member of this forum, and I hope it is not bad form to request advice so early in my participation. I am in final negotiations with a dealer to purchase a 2014, SL63 with every option imaginable and less than 7,000 miles on the odometer. I plan to use this for my daily driver. We live in the Dallas area and I commute about 18 miles each way to work on a combination of freeway and surface streets.
I began looking for a new car, having decided to trade my 2015 E350 in on something more exciting to drive. I have been very interested in a preowned Porsche 911 cab, and have driven a few of the different trim levels. Then I test drove the SL550 and SL63. Because we have had very good experience with several MB cars (the 2015 E350, 2016 S550, 2011 C300, 2014 GL450, and 2004 CLK) I am now leaning toward the SL63.
Long story, I know. I am interested in your thoughts: is this car suitable for a daily driver that has the added excitement factor for pleasure driving? Is it a worthy alternative to a 911 cab of similar age? Should I be at all concerned about a preowned AMG car, given a supposition that it has been driven fast, even though it has very low miles? Is this car likely to be as reliable and of similar cost of ownership compared to the 911?
Any other thoughts about this vehicle?
Thank you in advance for your responses to a new member.

I too use the SL63 for a a DD and yes it is great for this duty. An absolute blast to drive. I went from an SL 55 AMG to a Porsche Cayman S and as nice as the Porsche was in the handling sense, in my opinion the SL is more fun to drive. The ride in the Porsche was a little too intense for a DD. I do not miss the Porsche. The torque of the SL is addictive. The only changes I have made are adding wheels and an exhaust. Just too quiet for my tastes. The interior and driving experience is just sublime and the touch of a button convertible feature is money!

Thank you

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am really leaning that direction. Was hoping I wouldn't have buyer's remorse about the Porsche.

I have had many high end cars over the years but just will not pay the MSRP of a new AMG - just me. I recently bought a 13 SL63 with the high performance option and just about everything else except ceramic brakes. It had 3.600 miles on it and showed a few scratches, etc. However, once detailed it looks showroom. I have it as my DD and am very happy with this purchase - you can drive it smoothly or if you want put in sport+ mode and hang on as the torque is unreal. So, buying pre-owned is good for me and I am very, very picky when I purchase someone else's vehicle.

For me, saving over $90k off MSRP for 3,600 miles was a no brainer! Good luck!

Thank you for replying to this thread. I'm getting excited about finding the right car. Apparently I was too slow to move on the original car I selected. The dealer told me yesterday they have an offer with deposit. So, my search continues. Based on your comments, I think I will broaden my search to include low mileage '13s.

a 911 is too uncomfortable and impractical to drive as a daily car. the SL is more usable and better for trips. It is a good match for a 911 as a sports car too

Mike - welcome to the club!

I like your choice in color, but I'm a tad biased.

So Mellow, bring us up to date. A year of driving with how many miles? What is your opinion?

I would have to say that this is the best DD super sports car you can buy period.
An absolute pleasure all around. A mature ride that is very well made and easy to appreciate the quality. I recently rented a Chevy Traverse SUV when out of town and it reminded me of the difference between a Corvette C 7 and the Mercedes R231. Quality certainly is noticeable!

In 3 1/2 months, I will have had my car for 2 years. So far I've put on about 6300 miles, and this is my daily driver (4 mi commute each way). I would agree that this is likely the best DD super GT you can buy. With the hard top easy to convert to topless, I tend to put the top down quite a bit when the weather cooperates. The engine is a monster, and the biggest problem is traction when putting down the power. I have not had it on the track yet (I am sure I will sometime), but from other reports it's also a decent track toy. It really hides its hefty weight pretty well. My Magno paint is holding up nicely, although I think I am going to give the bumpers a bath in a diluted all-in-one cleaner and then hit it with an IPA (no, not an India Pale Ale - an IsoPropyl Alcohol and water mix), I've already bought some Carpro Eraser for that.

The car is not without its own quirks. Sometimes I don't quite understand the MCT (it is more quirky than my previous E63's MCT), but it's leaps and bounds better than the 7G-tronic that was in my CLK Black Series. I've had (just a few) repairs that were needed on the SL63 and too soon. With all of the sensors and electronics in the car and euro parts being so pricey, I am in no way going to own this without an extended warranty. NO WAY. However, I do expect to keep this car for a long time. It honestly does everything I need it to. It can also be jekyll or hyde depending on what you want that day.

Theres alot of things you cant put on matte paint, like everything. But the intent is that you can only clean it. I bought a few special things and tried them all. The best thing is to use a pure car wash, like meguires deep crystal car wash, or a cleaner like simple green or 409 and only with micro fiber clothe. Never rub a dry surface always use water for lube.

PS(This is for professionals only, you can also use acrylic enamel reducer)

I would avoid something like Meguiar's Deep Crystal Car Wash, since it has some glossing agents in it - and that's the last thing you want on a matte paint.

I use Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte for my soap.

Chemical Guys Meticulous White

I washed my car for the first time this week. Based on a recommendation on this thread, I bought the Chemical Guys products - Wash, micro fiber wash glove and micro fiber towels. I am very happy with the outcome. It seems pretty easy to avoid streaking and it really looks great. Thank you for the recommendation.

I called meguires before I bought my car and talked with them about washing products and coatings . they said they had no products that can be used on matte except deep chrystal wash, because it is a detergent with high sudsing properties. It makes the suds that lift the dirt up and it can be washed or wiped away from the surface.
They said they recommend it because it doesnt have anything in it that glosses, or has fillers in it that will make the matte surface go glossy
I bought a couple of the special matte products but after using them once or twice, I find nothing better about them and prefer the wash job period.
