Carbon Build up Intake Valves

Many new MBZ engines use direct cylinder fuel injection. This causes carbon build up on the intake valves and runners as their is no port injection to clean the valves and runners with a spray of gas. MBZ does not have a preventative maintenance program for this. MBZ uses the “break down” method, ie wait until something go wrong. This usually show ps up as a miss. This requires replacement of the heads which is covered under warranty if you still have one. There are spray de-carbonizers (Seafoam) is sprayed into the air intake after the MAF. On 4L Hot V, this is a bit of a tricky process. Does anyone know of a shop that in San Diego that performs this work. They

Would regularly running Techron through the fuel tank help?

Not really, since gas never flows over the intake valves. Regular oil changes every 5K using 5-40 oil. I added a oil catch can between the PVC and intake. If it gets bad enough, walnut shell blasting works. It a bit labor intensive given the intakes are on the sides.

I'm in the process of taking (2) 4L Hot V's engines apart a 27K milage and a 7k milage unit I'll be taking some pictures of the intake ports to see what they look like and post them here.
I assume that you are talking about walnut shell blasting when the heads are of?

BMW “invented” the process of walnut shell blasting. They do it with the heads on for their 4 and 6 bangers. They rotate the crank so the the valves are closed on the cylinder(s) they are blasting. . Not sure of the BMW process for a V8. I asked my Indy shop that also have the walnut blasting equipment. He said he can do the AMG hot V, but it’s expensive because of the location of the intake manifolds and all the stuff they have to remove to get to them. The plus side is you’re not pulling a traditional V intake manifold with the coolant running through it. I just consider it maintenance on a high end engine.
I’d be interested in seeing picture of the intake valves.

Hereby 2 pictures of the cylinder head intake ports from a M178 motor with 27K miles on it, I'll soon be taking one apart with 7K miles on it and will make some shots of those to compare.

This seems promising: https://team.valvoline.com/diy/truth...carbon-buildup

"cars that may already have carbon buildup on the intake valves, Valvoline Instant Oil Change locations can inspect and perform an EasyGDI service to clean those valves and remove any buildup that may have accumulated over time.EasyGDI employs a proprietary chemical mixture that the technician runs through the engine to clean the valves. It is a quick and simple service that avoids costly engine teardowns for repairs.

thanks for posting these pictures. I want to make intake valve and runner cleaning part of my periodic maintenance. I just didn’t know the interval as MBZ has no service available as they claim this is not a problem (we’ve heard this before with the 6.3L engine). Looks like every 25k would be a good time to get it done.

Dry ice huh? I used walnut shells on Volvos in 1989.

Sure looks like 25,000 miles is plenty long enough on the DI Mercedes intake.

Hendrick did you come up with a way to walnut shell blast the intakes for those four liter engines?

John,

No, I have not. I have the 7K mileage motor apart, and I'll take some pictures to see how the head compares to the 27k motor pictures I posted before.
I just have been busy with other projects, so it will be a while before I start to rebuild (or sell the parts) the two M178 motors I have on hand.

An update. It appears that the 4.0 V8 has oil catch systems for each engine bank. I confirmed this with MBZ and two indies. It doesn’t solve the problem but it helps
