SL63 2017 Tyre size change
Hi All,
I'm looking for some advice and to know if anyone here has experience in this topic.
My SL63 has 19" rims all around, with Conti Sport 5P tyres, which I've never liked and need changing soon: I find them to be noisy with only average performance. They quite an old tyre design goodish in their day, but out performanced now.
I was looking to change to Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, which I've heard good things about, but I cannot for the life of me find any rear tyres 285/30R19 98Y anywhere. I've spoken to Michellin who say they made them, but have none available (within the European network) and don't know when/if they are to be made again. The front 255/35RR19 Y 96 are available and not an issue to find.
So I'm considering an option of fitting MPS4S in 295/30R19Y 98 instead, as they are available.
The diameter change is +1.2% -25.7" - 26"
The width change - +3.6% 11.2" - 11.6"
The sidewall Change +2.9% 3.4" - 3.5"
The Circumferance change +1.2% 80.8" - 81.5"
Revoltions per mile - 7 - 784 - 777
The speed would read 1 mile per hour low at 80mph (can this be recalibrated?)
Does anyone have experience of this, or can offer thoughts on the impact on the car's handling/performance or general guidance?
Would it cause any issues with the ABS or ESP or any other of the car's computers/systems?
All the best
Richard

Hi Richard
Well you doing exactly what I have just done other than my rears are 20" and 295/30/20 and were fitted today
See https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...ps4s-cup2.html
I guess my post should be booted over to here as well?
As to
don't worry your speedo as common with all cars is wrong and the amount varies with speed most are near right at 30mph t 50mph but over that as much as 5-!0% wrong but always should over read.......maybe? Check it with a GPS over a few miles
I hate them they are useless at turn in on a bend but to be fair very good on OTT wet roads. They are far too hard for me but its my sunny day car car and I have little interest in mileage if they last 2 years thats OK for me 8K last year but will be less in future
Yep been there for MO1 for AMG none in UK for 1-2 months. I did find a set of MO but really that's for non AMG and which cars is an unknown big heavy tintop of light car small car? I guess you could ask Mercedes or Michelin and in writing wish I had!
So as you will read I chose Goodyear Eagle F1 supersport being possibly better but in many ways just as there are no MO1 for AMG tyres available
Well neither know what tyre you have and so far so good (GRIN) in 30 miles but as long as both rears and both fronts are the same it should be uninterested
Really the tyres 10mm wider that's only 5mm each side but more bunched on the wheel. Michelin wrote to me min width on a 10" rim is 275 mid range is 285 and max is 295 but that does not account for closeness to body and suspension parts. You can aways ring Mitchielin or email them or any other manufacturer and ASK but you will get some non committal as in......... always use manufacturers commendations ........ IE we don't know if it misses bodywork
Did I miss something?

I have a 2017 SL65 and just put new tires on it three weeks ago. It came with Conti 5P's and as they aged and wore their performance declined. With the V12 if I floored the car at 50mph the traction control would engage, forget a hard launch. I had just put Michelin PS4s's on my S65 and was surprised how much better they are than the Conti's. They are smoother, quieter and stickier. I used to frequently get some traction control engagement, but not any more. The S65 has an open differential, unlike the SL65 which has a limited slip differential.
The SL65 came with 255-35-19F and 285-30-20R. I replaced the Conti's with the Michelins, used the stock size in the front and put 295-30-20's in the rear. That 295 is the stock tire on the E63s so the MB dealer where I had this done had a number of them in stock. Also had the car aligned and it was interesting how bad the factory alignment was. The car is totally transformed. Smoother, quieter and far more straight line traction. I have not done a race start yet but from a 25mph roll I can floor the throttle and the car just hooks up and launches, no traction control at all. Those 295's can get all the 738 ft-lb of torque to the road with no wheel spin.
There are no issues with any of the electronics or features. As I recall the Michelin tires are very slightly smaller in diameter than the same size Conti 5P. We have a lot of permanent info only radar speed displays on the roads here. I see the identical radar readout as with the old tires. Digital car readout of 55mph, radar reading of 54MPH.
Just do it if you can find the tires.

The car is much smoother and quieter with the Michelin PS4's than the old Contact 5P's. Traction is far better, I have yet to trigger the traction control in moderately hard driving. With the old tires it engaged just on the way to the local grocery store. I still have not yet tried a race start. No issue at all with the 295-30's and they seem to be enough tire, at least on warm roads. I suspect the traction will be less on road surfaces less than 40 degrees with the summer tires, not an issue here in SoCal.
