I think I am glad I found you .. although you might think that I am nuts .. but I want to try and install a Nardi wheel on my 2003 R230 ! I have had the wheel on several previous Mercedes - albeit W107s and various Porsches..
I am aware of the challenges involved .. and am quite willing to lose the airbag assembly. My car has no telephone so the only connectivity I would like to retain is to the onboard computer for mileage and FSS issues .
What I have in mind is cut an old R230 wheel down to the base sleeve core that contains the splined female grommet and reroute the computer connection wiring to a small ancillary button box
which might be attached to the steering column ..
Are you interested in helping me some way ?
Thanks, Ron Martin - Tampa

Remounting ALL of the steering wheel switch functions on the column (or even in your new wheel) is pretty straight forward. You just need to strip the switches and support electronics from the air bag and then wire them (3 wires total) directly to pins 9,10, & 11 of the N80 module (module in column below clockspring).
I expect anyone with a lathe can cut your wheel down to a nice adapter/hub.
If you needed your wheel re-wrapped, DCT would be happy to do it for you. If you need more input on the electronic integration, send me a PM with some contact info (I do the electronic integrations for DCT motorsports).
If you want to incorporate real paddle shifters into the new wheel, I can help you with the digital to analog conversion required to do that as well.
Cheers,
Chris
MANY thanks for your response and offer to help with the wiring (or rewiring) of my steering wheel project.
First - I am old hotrodder that raced a MGTD, a Jag XK-120M, and a SIATA 208S with a Ferrari 2 liter Modial engine WAY back in the late 1950s in the SCCA days... So when folks warn me about airbags and safety harnesses ..I have "been there and done that"..
In am trying to create a different breed of cat with my 2003 SL500... I have installed a Quaife LSD, the AMG P 030 performance brakes, 19" black series wheels with Nitto tires and intend to convert my Steering wheel to accept my old NARDI wheel from other cars.. the last was a W017 026 factory rally 450SLC 5.0. While I appreciate everyone's words of caution... after flying Navy P3s for 6000 hours ..no airbags are NOT my concern..
What I would GREATLY appreciate from you is what I need to know and do to connect the wiring squibs to my two button assemblies on the NARDI when it is time ..and how to zero out the missing airbag so the computer will not go nuts and illuminate warning lights and create other issues for me.
I intend to cut the base of the R230 donor wheel to accommodate the NARDI and somehow fabricate a small button housing on the sides of the original NARDI base housing while threading the squibs up and through the inner cavities of the NARDI base.
ANY help (when I get to that point)will be GREATLY appreciated.

I have tried calling and never can get a live person on the phone and am quite frustrated with the lack of communication. Please let me know what the status is and when i can expect my steering wheel.
I hope for some response, as i have waited patiently for some time and would like some answers.
