Exclamation Weird problem - with Roof

Hello everyone
I have a weird problem with my beautiful black 2000 SLK230. Everything is normal on this car except: The Convertible Roof.
It just doesn't open or close SOMETIMES. Or sometimes gets stuck halfway.
But I have noticed something even weirder In a hot day the roof would open normally or close normally (mostly) but in just a warm day or cloudy days or rains (anything but hot) it wouldn't. Also, in night time, almost never.
About two months ago I tried opening the top and it wouldn't so I took it to a mercedes specialist nearby but it opened right up with no problems.

Whenever it gets stucked, I have to open/close manually which is pretty hard and takes a lot of energy
Most of the times this is what I do to open the roof: Pull the luggage compartment cover. Go in the Cabin and Pull the Roof switch. The glasses roll down/trunk opens and there, it stops. Trunk stays open and a buzzing sound stays on. After that I get annoyed and just close the trunk by pushing the Roof switch.

And if the roof is open sometimes: While I'm trying to close it, I sit in the cabin and push the roof switch. Trunk opens, and that's where it stops. Than I have to manually pull the roof out and close it. The problem in this is that the roof closes but the glasses stay down and red light in the roof switch keeps blinking. Than I drive the car a few miles and than turn it off and again try closing the roof and this time it just closes fine.

I consulted with many dealers but no help and no help from any other Merc'Specialists either.

Anyone there who could help please!

Thanks in anticipation.

It sounds like either one of the roof switches (5 from memory) or needs lubricating??

Likely a switch problem

I would bet money it is related to three switches S69/1, S69/2, and S69/3. I had similar problems with my 1999 SLK230 and replaced those switches. It never had a problem afterwards.

Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you an email that has the switch part numbers, and instructions on how to replace them.

Is this information that you can post here in case the rest of us develop the same problem?

I did post the switch replacement information a while ago, but the pictures didn't stick. If you know how to post pictures that will stay for the long haul, I will be happy to redo it.

The pics

Here is the info I found through another MBWorld.org user. Thanks!

--------------------------------------------

The S69/2 and S69/3 switches are on the same cable assembly. Just remove the headliner (see below) and follow the cable. It goes from S69/3 across to S69/2. Then along the passenger side roof line. Down through the roof mechanism and into the trunk. The only major tricky part was getting at the connector in the trunk. I left the existing switch assembly in place and routed the new cable next to it. Then I worked my way along the old assembly and snipped the wire ties, pulled the old out and wire tied the new in. It was a little tedious but not to bad.

The S69/1 switch is very easy. Remove the trim on the windshield header. It is a very short wire run.
