SLK/R170: 31hp/34trq increase from powerchip??
I'm new to this site... I was searching around the internet and bumped into this website that claims they have a chip that adds 31hp and 34 ft-lbs trq for $650 (SLK230K). I read it a little and I was kind of skeptical. Has anyone installed one of these chips?, they have a dyno sheet as well. It seems to me they are only advancing timing to increase the HP/TRQ. Could we adjust timing on our cars without using a chip or new ecu?

But this is a chip-only upgrade, and on the SLK230, you'll be lucky to get ANY increase, especially if you're not running higher than 93-octane fuel.
I remember when Upsolute made similar claims. It turned out their chip actually reduced performance from stock.
I also think Wetteraur took several of their chip-only upgrades off the market because they weren't seeing the advertised gains.
Don't believe it, notice the dyno graph shows crank hp not wheel hp. I'd like to see a dyno for increase at the wheels where it counts, I doubt they pulled the engine and dyno'ed it at the crank.

But how about the stock SLK230 with 197 hp? Is it wheel hp or Crank hp?
Dynomometers that tuners use measure power at the rear wheels.
If you take an unmodifier car and measure the power at the rear wheels, you can compare that to the manufacturers rating and get a figure for the drivetrain loss. Then you can make your modifications, measure the power at the rear wheels, and apply the same drivetrain loss figure to get the crank power after modifications.
If the car was performing as advertised when it was stock, then this type of measurement is very accurate.
However, I think the stated figure of +31hp/+34ft-lbs with only a chip is a flat-out lie, unless they mean UP TO +31hp/+34ft-lbs, so and anything less (including ZERO or POWER LOSS) works as advertised.
1. I found that the response of the accelerator is significantly quicker that the stock. Actually, I found the stock too slugglish compared with many Japs when little/partial throttle.
2. The engine is running smoother that before. It seems to me the engine is a little bit quieter too. Temperature is kept the same. Gasoline consumption will be little bit lower I persume as I need not to push so hard than before.
3. Acceleration is smoother and easier. The engine rpm increase is much quicker and smoother when putting the accelerator on floor. This makes the change of gear (AT) earlier too. This is the reason why I think the gas consumtion will be a little bit lower.
However, I could not tell if Powerchip claims there is power increase to 165KW and 319Nm for my Gold version chip is accurate as I do not put the engine on the dyno to measure.
My personal comment : Good enough, quite good value of money(A$1290), match with expectation but no big suprise.

Because I cannot put my car on dyno as I do not have the figure before the modification even the stock figure, I cannot give any information for comparision. If someone has put their SLK230 on dyno before, pls kindly state the stock power and torque both on crankase and wheels.
I do beleive modifying pulley will increase power especially torque significantly. However, I concern about engine running hotter as compression is higher as result, more stress on the engine mechanically such as piston and rings, cylinders and valves and also the warranty.
In fact, I am happy with the better response and smoother engine now and have no worries about the reliability of the car
If you look at their website you'll notice that they "evaluated a C230K and found no potential gains." Doesn't the C230 use a very similar engine? If so, why tremendous gains with one and none with the other?
The dyno sheets... was the horsepower and torque measured at the crank or the rear wheels?

Its done on a Dynopak dynamometer. its measured at your rear axle ( more accurate than caluclating
for power loss at the tires)
