ASR/BAS Warning light

Hi all,

My '99 SLK has just developed its first fault. After it has been running for about a minute the orange ASR/BAS warning light comes on and stays on. The car drives perfectly normally other than the light being on.

Has anyone else seen this, and are there any horror stories about really expensive fixes being involved ?.

Any and all input is most welcome.

John

Have you had the battery disconnected? If so, the owners manual tells you to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. I had to do this when I installed some accessories.

Geoff

Many thanks for your suggestion. I haven't had the battery disconnected. I did however try turning the steering wheel lock to lock whilst the ignition was 'On' but the car not started. Sad to say it didn't make any difference.

Sometimes the light is on straight from cold, other times it comes on after the car has been running for a couple of minutes.

I guess I’m going to have to screw up my courage, take a deep breath and visit my local Merc dealer. I’ll just put a smile on my face and say "my time to empty your wallet” light has just come on. I wonder why they use symbols like ASR/BAS and not just pound (or dollar) signs !

true, the new 2005's should be coming out with cost-evaluating displays, so it will say BAS and give u an estimate right there of say 400.00 Euros, hell, a credit card scanner should pop out of the ashtray so you can prepay it to get the message to go away.

The really elegant thing is that the credit card scanner would, of coure, be an extra and it it will only be able to fitted when the cash register option module had also been fitted.........Mercedes we just love 'em don't we.

Do you remember the days when the most complex thing you can to do on a car was to take out the 'ponits' and give them a quick clean with a nail file !

All the best to all with fault lights 'a-glowing

John :-)

Sorry that suggestion didn't work, however, I don't understand how you turned the steering wheel from lock to lock with the engine off. Before you take it in, you might try it with the engine running. The owner's manual describes this process for clearing the ASR/BAS light after having the battery disconnected.

I guess I could be really brave and try disconnecting the battery first just to ‘reset’ things. This will probably mean I’ll get a whole Christmas tree of “empty your wallet” lights come on!.

You can turn the wheel with out the engine running. Remember that us Brits are made of though stuff and power steering is still considered something for whimps, like central heating, dish-washers and tea bags!

I think there is a bit of legislation somewhere that says that you must still be able to turn a car’s steering wheel even when the power system fails, all-be-it with the muscles of a super hero.

Thanks again for your advice, I’m in the middle of negotiating to sell a couple of my kidneys, once I have the cash I’m off to see that nice Mr. Merc !

All the best to all with warning lights glowing this morning.

PS I spent a happy year in Texas (Arlington) many years ago, very enjoyable…

Hi John

I had the same problem a couple of months ago in my CLK. However, I also lost cruise control, so yours may be a different problem. Anyway, here's my post from mbclub.co.uk after I had it repaired:

The CLK went into Road Range Chester yesterday, for about three hours. As predicted, the fault was a brake sensor switch.

Here's the breakdown:

A 001 545 01 09 Stoplight Switch £ 6.90
Labour £69.50
VAT £13.37
TOTAL £89.77

Expensive, but at least it's fixed. The bad news (that was the good? ), is that I need new rear discs and pads, approx. cost £240 .

At least they let me keep the old switch ...
HTH

Cheers

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for that info. A bill less than £100, wow, I'm surprised they thought it worth doing the paperwork for so little.

Actually I'm being a bit hard on MERC, so far my routine service bills haven't been too bad, the A service on an SLK is only round £120, reasonable for the type of car.

All the best

John :-)

you guys are lucky at least with the slk230, the s-class will tell u what is wrong with your car, and the warning will stay on your speedoter dash display until u get it fixed, it took me 4 months to figure out u can press the reset button and the warning will go away. When the warning is there, you cant shift thru the menus, change songs or adjust volume using the steering wheel, u cant see your mileage or ur mpg, or the nav in the dash display... all designed for $$$
