SLK/R170: MPG in SLK
Magazines and what not claim 18-22, but I get better... Do you get better than what is claimed for the SLK-Class?

After filling up a full tank and mix freeway and local driving, the light turns on after 210-220 miles...
Interesting, I got 24 with my '99 C 230K and 26 on the highway. Then I changed the muffler and the average went to 26 and the highway went to almost 30. And that was fully loaded going to Whistler, BC.
For my previous '99 SLK230 M/T over 12,000 miles
Average City: 20mpg
Average Highway: 29mpg
Best ever: 31.9mpg
Worst ever: 18.1mpg
EPA estimate for this car was 21city/30highway
For my current '02 SLK32 AMG over 10,500 miles
Average City: 16mpg
Average Highway: 26mpg
Best ever: 28.3mpg
Worst ever: 14.0mpg
EPA estimate for this car was 18city/24highway
The good thing about the SLK230 was that, unlike the SLK32, the fuel economy didn't suffer much even when driven agressively. However, both cars got significantly better fuel economy at 10,000 miles than they did when they were new, so I can see how magazines testing a new car would report worse fuel economy.
FYI, the 1998-2000 C43s were rated at 18city/23 highway and the curb weight is 3448 lbs.

All numbers are for a full tank. Where we live the car does a lot of short trips (1-2 miles) so the mileage is even worse than city it seems. Bad is really the worst on the street mileage. The worst mileage was recorded on track days. I get between 7 and 9 on the track.
I have also noticed the mileage work it’s way up approximately 1-2 MPG after break in.
