You mustnt. The baby seats from MB turn of the airbags, others dont, and airbag deployment will kill your child if they are in a reverse facing seat for sure, and MB claim can do considerably damage in a front facing seat that is near the airbag. [although Ive never been quite sure of the latter, particularly with an older child sat far back]
I have both types of seat (the baby reverse, and the 2->older forward facing seats) in my SL. As it happens the children are very rarely in the SL, I prefer them in the back of a car with three-point seatbelts securing their car seats.
I dont think MB will turn off the passenger airbag either - and by the time you paid them for that it would be cheaper to buy the baby seat, and safer when you have an adult passenger.
The only real drawback of the baby seat is that its not part of a push chair system, i.e you cant pick it up and attach wheels to it, you need to move the baby, or carry the baby in the seat. And also, when the baby is very very young you need to roll up a kitchen towel to make a head stabliser to stop the head moving from side to side.

Richard, Thanks for the info,MB refused to turn the airbag off.
The salesman told us that iarbag could be turned of by the "switch" near the gearstick.
Now we know the truth,we have allready bought the seat and pram that go together,so as you say we will have to carry the seat in the boot as well as the pram.
Looks like a trip to MB this weekend to buy one.
Thanks again.

Federal law has an exception allowing for the disabling of front passenger air bag in two-seaters for child-seat use. So you can always take it to another shop to disable it.

(1) I think your dealer was wrong about being able to turn it off. There is a lamp (that looks like a switch) near the gearstick that shows when its off. Im 99% sure your dealer's salesman was wrong.
(2) My baby has just grown out of the baby seat, so i'll give you a call

Good question. However, for me, I never even considered putting a baby in the SLK. I don't feel comfortable about their safety in a small convertible. The babies stay in my sedans or minivan.

There is a cushion that dealers use when road testing a vehicle with the portable laptop hooked up to the car. It is placed on the passenger's seat, and then the laptop is placed on top of it. The cushion has the same transponder as the baby seat does, and the car thinks the cushion is a baby seat, effectively disabling the passenger airbag. This prevents the laptop from becoming a flying projectile in a crash, should the airbag deploy and hit it. However, I'm not sure it is for sale to the general public, and it wouldn't be surprised if it is not. Theoretically, you could put the cushion on the seat, and then put any generic baby seat on top of it, resting assured that the airbag is disabled.
