cut springs or sports spring

I saw on Formymercedes.com and ebay, they sell sports springs for slk for $199. Is it a set of four springs or just one ??

How much is the cost for cutting the springs ? Is it safe ?

From what I heard, cuting springs is never a good thing to do. I think it screws up the progression rate on the spring or some thing. So just don't do it. If anyone has more knowlege about how cutting spring is bad please share with us.

Anyway $199 for spring is really cheap. The price is most likly for 4. You should check to see what brand they are. I never buy anything other then Eibach or H&R which are the same company I think. Kaamanne (excuse my spelling) has a really good but expensive set you should check them out too.

Do not cut your springs ....

The spring rate (number of pounds per inch of compression) is set for the travel that the SLK has. If you were to cut the springs, the car could bottom out on the bumpers far more often then it can stock. When the suspension hits the bumpers it stresses the suspension components and the chassis.
Lowering springs have a higher spring rate which allows for the shorter travel.
Does that help?

i paid AUS$150 for removal, cut then install back. If u can remove it yourself and own an electric saw, then it's free.

I do not recomend cutting springs. Buy the lowering springs instead. It is relatively cheap compared to the problems that may arise by cutting your springs.

Springs (Sets of 4) are about $200-250 depending on brand, not too bad if you ask me....especially for a Mercedes. If you cut the springs. you will regret it. And you'll look absolutely ridiculous bouncing down the road like a damn CRX.

Formymercedes on ebay is Jerry, his website is www.myroadster.net or formymercedes.com and he sells mostly SLK and Z parts. The springs are from a German company called SCHATZ and they are really good. So good, in fact, that I have them on my SLK.

Generally, cutting coils on a spring will only be worthwhile if the springs that are being cut are from a larger vehicle or one that has a higher rate. For instance, it's a widely accepted practice to cut W124 coils from a V-8, like the 400E or from an R129, to lower a W201. The ride is stiffer than H&R and is probably best suited for a tracked car. Cutting OEM coils (cold cutting, no torches) for the same car, just to lower, is not a good idea.
