1st long trip

I just got back from driving 500 miles in 2 days. I can say that I felt no more sore at the end of each 250 mile leg than I have in any other car. I was worried that the firm seats would hurt a lot on long trips but it was no more than the soft seats of my Neon or my Tundra. I am indeed impressed. The car was great and I finally got past the 1000 mile break in period.

Sounds great, I have not driven on long trips here in the states but when I was in Germany, I was quite impressed with the comfort. I've driven SUV's for awhile and never thought about taken a two-seater on a road trip. I'm looking forward to take this SLK on a road trip this summer.

Everyone's sense of comfort is different, but my wife and I find the SLK to be a great long distance road car. When we first picked it up in Europe last year, we put 2400 miles on in 7 days. Then last month we took a 3000 mile trip from Seattle, all through California and back in 8 days. We never felt uncomfortable or cramped. Of course you have to be able to fit all your stuff into one carry-on sized bag, and you can only buy small souvenirs.

I do find the seats some what uncomfortable. Just can't get the adjustment right. Don't have the power seats and the manual adjustments are limited.

Oh, I forgot to mention I averaged 27.9 mpg. Not bad.

Red face Of course that won't help if the souvenirs are diamonds from Antwerp!

Actually that can be an advantage when it comes to having to fly home with those oversized souvenirs or if you are otherwise tempted to stretch your travel budget with plastic. We did pick up a table top chandelier from the crystal emporium in Innsbruck which in its box fortunately fit between the seats when we wanted to put the top down. In Gibralter we ended up having the hand blown glass pitcher and glasses shipped by the company which is probably the best way to get bulky souvenirs sent home anyway. On top of that they made good on breakage by replacing items that did broke during shipping. Had the items broken while packed in our luggage it would have been our responsibility.

I recently did a 1200 mile round trip (to Las Vegas) and didn't have any comfort problems. I averaged 26.8 for the trip. Probably could have done better, but on the long stretches of 5 I don't think my speed got below 75 or 80.... and sometimes went somewhat higher.

Thought we were talking comfort, so I did not say anything about mileage... although nowdays I suppose that could be considered a comfort thing as well.

On that 3,000 mile trip through Washington, Oregon, and California, we averaged between 27 and 28 with the top down most of the way. Then on the last stretch, from Southern Oregon to Seattle, we had to finally put the top up, and we got 29.3 over just about 480 miles. Amazing the difference a little wind resistance makes.
