how is increasing all 4 contact patches (with arguably the stickiest street tires) detrimental to handling?
feel maybe, but then mb is not known for their great drivers cars.
18s (235/265)might handle and perform better but these are deffinitely better than stock

More contact patches does not equal a better handling car at all ,unless you go drag racing....
The mechanical grip of the tyres is not the only thing to consider..Traction, and the way the car progresses through various states of handling can be severely affected by such big tyres...
They may look nice to some people, and that is of course a personal view but as far as handling is concerned 17 inchers would have been more than enough, never matter 18 inches..
MB has manufactured a hell of a sports car this time around.....
If you had driven all the slk range from the 4cyl to the v6's and the v8, you would have noticed that the 4cyl had the better initial turn in, even when fitted with the 16 inches ,with the 17 inch being the optimum......
Aesthetically, 19 inch tires look very bad in proportion with the rest of the car and the wheel arch .
Too much tire equals more grip but is almost always detrimental to handling, poise, balance and feel....

when?
as i said before there is no feel anyway, its a mercedes
if 19s look bad then why do majority of the people that upgrade their wheels get 19s? (most reputable tuners also use 19s w/ the same exact tire specs)
suspension geometry doesnt change when you change wheels, and some 19in wheels are lighter than the stock 17s, wtf r u talking about???? do u even know anything about wheels?? sounds like ur some 60year old blabberin **** that hes heard here and there
ill put $ that ill smoke u in this "over tyred ugly car" and u drive a stock car w/ sport package if ud like
btw,
many mags did tire test and figured that 18in wheels are the best performance option (test car: 3 series, dont remember the others)

Wow! It's impressively nice! Couple of questions:
1. How much did all these cost?
2. How would the modifications effect warranty?
I am thinking about doing the same thing!

i dont think it looks good w/ such big wheels and i THINK that they have a negative impact on the handling of the car.
dont say SURELY if youre not sure
i would have been happy to explain everything to you

Nice car, congrats, 19"s are perfect for the SLK. It might not handle as well as 18"s but that's not what it's for. I think it's best to keep the stock wheels and get grippier tires for handling, track, autoX, etc. Getting rid of the fender gap and aggressive look, are a couple of reason to get 19"s. IMO.

ynot is right. 18" lightweight rims + 265F/235R competition tires are the optimal for handling/grip balance. 19's are the largest you can go to make the car look good with big rims and not have it be hugely detrimental to handilng. 20's are ridiculous and you should have your head checked if you try them. 17's are good too if you can get wide enough tires, but with the larger sidewall, turn-in response may not be as desirable as with lower profile tires.
Of course, the stock R171 suspension won't do. What's the point of having a larger contact patch if you can't put it to use in extreme cornering with the egregious body roll? You'll need at least sport springs (H&R, Brabus, etc) or coilovers (H&R, KW V3) to maximum the cornering potential of your car. I don't think they make roll bars/strut bars for our cars yet but once they do, it'll be much more balanced. See the following to understand how bad body roll is with stock (non-sport) suspension and 19" tires (my car on the track):
Yes, it's pretty bad.
