squeak

Now that my 171 is over a year old I have noticed an annoying squeak.

The sound comes from the general vicinity of the glove box and sounds like hard plastic rubbing against hard plastic. It typically only happens when there is flex (e.g. moving not too fast over bumpy roads)

I have not been able to isolate it as it mostly goes away if there is a passenger in the car and I cannot obvsiouly drive and isolate the sound at the same time.

Took it to the dealer when I had it in last and they could not sort it out.
Any thoughts?

have you had someone drive with you to try and pinpoint it? if they have i assume they were wearing the passenger seat belt? do you hear the noise when no one is in the passenger seat? when no one is in the passenger seat, where is the location of the seat belt buckle? have you ridden with the glove box open to hear anything? difficult without a passenger of course.

Check the seat belt. I found if it is by the seat and not over the edge it will make a rattle/squeak kind of sound.

lol! that is what i was alluding to with my questions. i did not want to come right out and ask about the position of the seat belt on the passenger seat!

I figured out the passenger seat belt jiggle a long time ago. When no one is in the car, I bring the buckle onto the passenger seat back. That is not the noise. The noise is definately in front of that and a plastic squeak not a metal rattle.

It does not seem to be coming out of the glove compartment, but somewhere near it.

so if it goes away when a passenger is in the car then logically when there is no weight in the seat you hear the noise. i read from someone's post that the back of the seat was 'loose' in one case.

Does your car have the heat scarfs? There was a thread last year about a loose hose problem in some seats.

Yes, but that is not where the noise is coming from

I have a similar squeak coming from that area, but only on cold days when I initially start the car. It goes away once the interior is heated. I finally isolated it to the defrost vent on the right side of the dashboard just above the adjustable vent. I had my wife hold on to that vent and the squeaking stopped. I still need to visit the dealer to have them fix it.

Perhaps it is the CD changer

I had a similar problem with squeaking from the glove box area which occurred at medium speeds on my 06SLK350. When I opened the glove box door, the sound grew louder. It went away when I pressed on the surface of the CD changer face plate.

The MB dealer first replaced the felt lining on the CD changer, but that didn't work, so they replaced the CD changer under warranty. The squeaking sound went away. Hope this helps!

Good luck,

--andy

I don't have a CD changer; so that was not it for me, but perhaps for others.
I believe my problem is coming from the A/C duct on the passenger side of the dashboard, but I have not had a chance to confirm/fix it yet.
