HELP: spinning/whirring sound at highway speeds!

Hi all,

If you've been on this board long enough, you will know that I have had many problems with my 07 SLK.

* no proper heat during the winter (this was fixed repeatedly)
* no A/C at all when the spring came (this was finally fixed)
* nav buttons sticking (entire nav system replaced)
* huge bill for Service A (which I paid in full)

Since my Service A, I've noticed a new problem:
* spinning/whirring sound at highway speeds

When I drive past 40 mph and 50mph, I start to hear a rapid spinning/whirring sound that gets faster and faster and as I reach highway speeds.

The service center looked at it today, but couldn't figure out what it was, since it's been raining all day, and there's all this rain noise and wind noise too.

But service dept closes (inconveniently) at 5:30pm, so there's no way I can get there before they close. The dealership is open till 8pm, so at least I can go for a drive with my service rep and try to explain the problem.

He did mention a bulge in the side of 1 tire (which I was already aware of), but was quick to add that I would not be able to get a free tire replacement, even though I got the unlimited tire replacement program in addition to the warranty.

I don't know if the bulge is causing a problem, but it sucks that I would have to have a tire blow out, before I can get a free tire replacement with a program that I already paid for.

did this problem get fixed already? not sure if it's the same as mine. i recently had this metallic slicing/scraping sound in the front passenger wheel area when i would accelerate. at first it was an on and off thing and then it became more frequent. anyway, i took it in to the dealership and warranty covered it. it was the brake pad holder scraping the rotor. they inspected the pads and they were ok and they replaced the holders for the front left and right.

nope, the tech claims that it is just road noise, but I disagree.

I will suggest the brake pad holder to them, and see what happens.

Is there anyone here from the DC/MD/VA area who is willing to ride with me to diagnose the problem?

Thanks,

Where are you located? I work in Ballston, Arlington. I am walking distance from American Service Center. If you can bring it by afterwork,I am usually here til 6pm. Let me know your schedule. With Ramadan starting tomorrow, not sure if I will be available in the evening. Weekends work also.

Amer

P.S. Ramadan Muburak!! I am thinking of doing Iftar at my place on a weekend evening. I will let u when..

I live in Woodbridge and work in Fairfax. But I am always all over northern VA several times throughout the week.

I am actually taking my car in to ASC on Monday evening right after work to fix my cell charger ports (blown fuse?), so maybe you can meet me there?

If you're busy with work and Ramadan, I'll just show you the car on the day we meet up for Iftar. Just let me know where and when. I don't check this website daily, but you can call my cell. I'll PM you my cell number, and you can do the same.

Ramadan Mubarak to you too!

the whiring could be simple as uneven tire wear....is it from one side only?? could be your brakes usually your calipers piston wont fully retract causing it to still be applieed which can also cause that whirring sound, as well as wheel bearings catching too much dirt grime etc and sludge causing similar sound too hope this helps man

It seems like it's coming from both the front wheels.. ? Anyway, Amer has kindly volunteered to listen to the sound, so hopefully we'll figure this out...

Oh ok.. I didn't want to name names before, but I got really bad service from Dan, and I told the manager Todd about this, and he switched me over to Alfred. Whenever Alfred is available, he provides really good service. I've only had issues when he wasn't around.

On the sales side, Frank has been my sales guy for both my new purchases, and it has been a great experience both times.

Is it speed-related or rather RPM-related? If it's RPM, it could be one of the pulleys. This seems to be a fairly common problem with the SLK. You might want to check out this thread.

It doesn't seem to be the RPM.. at highway speeds, when the RPM comes down to a lower value, I still hear the sound.
