Weird noise from car.

Okay, several times over the last few weeks, I've heard a noise from my car. What makes it weird is that the noise is coming from the car when it's been parked after driving it for a while. The car will be parked, locked and idle for a while when I'll notice it. It's a metallic sound, almost like some type of motor or pump, it occurs about every 10 seconds and lasts for about 1 second. It sounds like it's coming from under the car in the area of the engine compartment. Not sure how long it continues to do it, but it's not all the time as I'm sure it won't be doing it tomorrow morning for example.

Any ideas?

I am experiencing the same thing with my R500. The car is parked in the garage, the motor is off and the car is unlocked. Then a while later a sound comes from the engine bay area (maybe) as if some motor is working. It lasts a few seconds and then it goes away for a while and then back again. I noticed that if I lock the car at that time then it seems to stop. I am wondering if it is related to the immobilizer - car alarm.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Mine was already locked. I did try starting it once and relocked it but the noise still continued.

i've noticed the same for my 350 09' , I think it's from the hot exhaust reacting to the outside cold temperatures.

No, I'm familiar with the sounds of a creaking exhaust shield or system as it cools. This is definitely a mechanical device of some sort.

Good idea, I'll have to see if I can get a digital recording of it and post it up. Maybe my iPhone can capture it.

I'm in Baton Rouge as a matter of fact. You from this area originally?

Originally being a long time ago, yeah - born in New Orleans, moved to Denham, lived there until about '81 or so. Family's still there, and I end up back over to see 'em at least a couple of times a year. Left the SLK there when I ended up back in England, so I have a good excuse to go home.

I had my R500 in the dealership for scheduled maintenance and I asked my service advisor to check for this type of sound coming from the motor area. According to the dealership technicians this is normal, it is some sort of a coil system that stays hot in the event you want to turn on the REST feature on the climate control system to keep the car warm with the motor off.

Although it does sound possible, I still have my doubts if this is true since the service adviser could not confirm that the technicians were able to hear the noise. I guess a good test will be for me to turn on the REST system a few times after I park the vehicle in the garage and see if the noise will ever appear. If it does then what they told me is not the case. If the noise does not come back then it is it! The problem is that I haven't been able to replicate the noise at will. It occurs intermittently. I will keep the thread posted.

That could be plausible. Now that it's starting to warm up outside, I haven't noticed the sound. Maybe it is something temperature related.
