Can the SPRINGS that control DEFLECTION of the 6 spd MANUAL tran SHIFTER be ADJUSTED?

have 06 mt 350, the throws were alittle long so i cut off an inch of the stick, use momo knob, throws shorter and quicker but the spring that keeps stick from deflecting is stiffer, esp when moving to Reverse, my Q is, can i loosen the tension in the springs to make shifts even sweeeeeta? thanx, mike

Cutting the top portion of the shifter serves to make shifting require more effort. Lengthening the lower part (below the pivot point) serves to shorten the throw.

ben 721, i understand your reply, but i already cut the top off. i like the shorter throws, but would like to decrease the spring tension to make shifts a little easier. im looking for help w how to gget this done, if successful i can post a thread on how to and the advantages off the mod. thanx, mike

Short shift kits include a replacement shift lever that has the longer part at the bottom. The shifter is a lever and you want a longer stem at the bottom rather than a shorter stem at the top. I recommend buying a short shift kit but do not have experience with kits for Mercedes Benz transmissions and cannot recommend a specific one. Perhaps someone who has tried several can steer you in the right direction. I can tell you that they are not equal in quality or performance.

I hadn't thought of that potential problem. On reflection, the market is rather small as so few Mercedes Benz cars are equipped with manual transmissions. I have installed several such kits from different suppliers on BMWs.

Though the typical short shift kit includes bushings, fasteners, etc.; the "meat" in the kit is the shift lever that is longer below the ball. The longer the shaft (at the bottom) the shorter the throw and the more effort is required to shift.

If not, I suppose you could have a welder add some length to the lever beneath the ball, though it would be expensive and difficult to know just how much to add to reach a satisfactory compromise between throw and effort required.
