Neither because they didn't do a track test...... the Boxster S did a 1:28.7 lap time against the SLK350 in an earlier show which is a very quick time.

Most track tests of the new Boxster S and SLK55 seem to have the Porsche as slightly faster. EVO magazine did a track test of both and the Boxster S was quicker, they also compared the SLK55 to the SL55 with the SLK being a tiny bit quicker...... the SL55 Top Gear time is 1:33.2

interesting whilst the boxter s got the better handling and interior finish remarks, the slk55 still evoked the most emotion, thus was picked as a buy over the porsche.

The sl55 amg track test is a fake!

If you see the writing on it, it say's JC means jeremy clarskson meaning it belongs to him and he ask the stigg to back off abit, and also it says W means wet, he mentioned it in the cls55 video.

Yes thats a fair comment...... the Top Gear SL55 test was with JCs own car so they may not have pushed it that hard.

EVO magazines test track times for the 3 cars are:
Boxster S 1:28.55
SLK55 1:29.30
SL55 1:30.05

Times for the same three models at the Hockenheim track in Germany (taken from www.track-challenge.com):
Boxster S 1:15.7 (the old Boxster S did 1:19)
SLK55 1:17.1
SL55 1:18.4

On track the new Boxster S is quick..... on the road the SLK55 will be quicker in the hands of a reasonable driver.

the hp of our slk55 is 360...but boxster only 280.....
if we talk abt the boxster have better handling......power is meaningless ...
the track time tells....

same case as the japanese best motoring....the NSX-R always beat all the other supercars...(360, 911turbo, garllado,...M3 CSL......etc..)

The new NSX-R is amazing but I've seen a few Best Motoring videos where it gets beaten..... one had the 911 Turbo the other it was beaten by two Lambos.

Power to weight ratio is more important than outright power..... when you compare P/W instead of BHP the Boxster S and SLK55 are much closer 208bhp/ton Vs 235BHP/ton (if I remember correctly)

The Boxster S is a great car without a doubt, but JC said the engine defines the car, I couldn't agree more.

SLK 55 amg is slower than Boxster S on a track?

What the hell? I thought the 55 amg was a big monster that would eat the
tiny boxsterS alive!! I unerstand the power to weight ratio thing, but isn't that
true that the AMG has a much bigger engine but a similar size (weight) as
the boxster?

Is handling really such a big issue on track? I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest.

No the AMG weighs around 400 pounds more than the Boxster S. More weight equals less agility so even if you have two cars with identical power to weight ratios the lighter of the two will almost always be more agile round a track...... eg. a 3000lbs car with 400bhp has the same power to weight ratio as a 200bhp car that weighs 1500lbs.

If the SLK55 and Boxster S were racing on a track I'd put money on the AMG winning...... the Boxster driver may be able to out brake the AMG into a corner but wouldn't have a chance overtaking on a straight...... whereas the AMG driver (if he can stay close round the corners) would have a good chance of overtaking the Boxster on the straights.

Another track where both cars have known lap times is the Nurburgring 8:17 for the new Boxster S and 8:24 for the SLK55.

There's acceleration and there's handling. MB will out acclerate the Porsche, the Porsche will out handle the MB.

Who wins, on what track, depends on the track. Larger oval, accleration will usually win. Track with many turns and some hairpins, handling is a bigger factor.

If your buying a car to race for most the hours, you wouldn't buy either one (new anyway).

If your going to street drive for most of the hours, acceleration is a lot more fun (as long as the car still handles well, and the MB does).

That depends where you live :p over here in the UK there are speed cameras and police traps ALL over the place..... they are aimed at stopping speeding so most are on fast main roads or town centres....... it only takes 4 minor speeding tickets (35mph in a 30 limit) and you loose your licence for a year!!!!! so its very hard to fully exploit the acceleration to any sort of fun speed without risking fines and even prison.

You can on the other hand have lots of fun on twisty country roads where you'd be very unlucky to get caught by the police (because the are too busy ticketing on the busy main roads )...... so handling (for me at least) is far more important that acceleration.

Fun acceleration does not REQUIRE speeding.

On the other hand I would be surprised (and would NOT want to be on the same road with you going in the other direction ), if you push any car to the handling limits on a public road versus what you would do on a track.

I have not had problems (and have had a lot of fun) "handling" my SLK55 on twisty roads.

But whatever works for you, enjoy (and be safe).

True it doesn't require excessive speed but its not easy to fully deploy the power of something like the SLK55 and then stop at the speed limit..... 0-30 is gone in a blink of an eye (and the police over here would probably pull you over even if you didn't break the limit) and 0-60 is a scant few seconds of fun! Acceleration gives you short bursts of fun. The handling roads I drive for fun can be driven at speeds within the speed limit (most of the time ) and without being a danger to anyone and the fun lasts for as long as the road does...... one of my favourites is 45 miles of smooth undulating twisty that hardly anyone uses..... the last time I was there we only saw one other car during the entire blast! the only problem is I have to drive 150 miles to get there

I'm not dissing the SLK...... I liked it but concluded I would loose my license if I had one while also much prefering the handling of the new Boxster S

my friend just purchased a boxster s. beautiful car, fabulous handling, great looks. however: 1) it still looks like the old boxster, unless you are an aficionado of the car. don't get me wrong it still looks fantastic!! 2) it is does not come close to providing you a thrilling sensation compared to the slk55 with respect to the sound of the car. the slk55's deep, throaty exhaust is just awesome, nothing can beat it. 3) the interior is not so "superior" compared to the slk55 as has been noted soooooo many times around here, it is nicely appointed. 4) the handling is awesome (he has active suspension) but, the slk55 holds it's own imho 5) the folding hardtop of the slk55 is far better. now that i have driven and been in a boxster s i can now say that i agree with jc as to which car i would own, the one i have!.
