EVO magazines test track times for the 3 cars are:
Boxster S 1:28.55
SLK55 1:29.30
SL55 1:30.05
Times for the same three models at the Hockenheim track in Germany (taken from www.track-challenge.com):
Boxster S 1:15.7 (the old Boxster S did 1:19)
SLK55 1:17.1
SL55 1:18.4
On track the new Boxster S is quick..... on the road the SLK55 will be quicker in the hands of a reasonable driver.

the hp of our slk55 is 360...but boxster only 280.....
if we talk abt the boxster have better handling......power is meaningless ...
the track time tells....
same case as the japanese best motoring....the NSX-R always beat all the other supercars...(360, 911turbo, garllado,...M3 CSL......etc..)

Power to weight ratio is more important than outright power..... when you compare P/W instead of BHP the Boxster S and SLK55 are much closer 208bhp/ton Vs 235BHP/ton (if I remember correctly)

SLK 55 amg is slower than Boxster S on a track?
What the hell? I thought the 55 amg was a big monster that would eat the
tiny boxsterS alive!! I unerstand the power to weight ratio thing, but isn't that
true that the AMG has a much bigger engine but a similar size (weight) as
the boxster?
Is handling really such a big issue on track? I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest.

If the SLK55 and Boxster S were racing on a track I'd put money on the AMG winning...... the Boxster driver may be able to out brake the AMG into a corner but wouldn't have a chance overtaking on a straight...... whereas the AMG driver (if he can stay close round the corners) would have a good chance of overtaking the Boxster on the straights.
Another track where both cars have known lap times is the Nurburgring 8:17 for the new Boxster S and 8:24 for the SLK55.

Who wins, on what track, depends on the track. Larger oval, accleration will usually win. Track with many turns and some hairpins, handling is a bigger factor.
If your buying a car to race for most the hours, you wouldn't buy either one (new anyway).
If your going to street drive for most of the hours, acceleration is a lot more fun (as long as the car still handles well, and the MB does).

You can on the other hand have lots of fun on twisty country roads where you'd be very unlucky to get caught by the police (because the are too busy ticketing on the busy main roads

Fun acceleration does not REQUIRE speeding.
On the other hand I would be surprised (and would NOT want to be on the same road with you going in the other direction
), if you push any car to the handling limits on a public road versus what you would do on a track.
I have not had problems (and have had a lot of fun) "handling" my SLK55 on twisty roads.
But whatever works for you, enjoy (and be safe).

I'm not dissing the SLK...... I liked it but concluded I would loose my license if I had one while also much prefering the handling of the new Boxster S

my friend just purchased a boxster s. beautiful car, fabulous handling, great looks. however: 1) it still looks like the old boxster, unless you are an aficionado of the car. don't get me wrong it still looks fantastic!! 2) it is does not come close to providing you a thrilling sensation compared to the slk55 with respect to the sound of the car. the slk55's deep, throaty exhaust is just awesome, nothing can beat it. 3) the interior is not so "superior" compared to the slk55 as has been noted soooooo many times around here, it is nicely appointed. 4) the handling is awesome (he has active suspension) but, the slk55 holds it's own imho 5) the folding hardtop of the slk55 is far better. now that i have driven and been in a boxster s i can now say that i agree with jc as to which car i would own, the one i have!.
