slk63 confirmed by edmunds for 2007

WOW! now this car is going to be haulin 500 hp!!! Comments?

AFFALTERBACH, Germany — Of late, AMG has concentrated on artificially aspirated engines, namely supercharged V8s and turbocharged V12s. But that's all about to change when Mercedes-Benz's performance division unveils its new V8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Dubbed the ML156, the new normally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 will make its Frankfurt debut in the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. The engine delivers 510 hp at 6,800 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. AMG officials told Inside Line the large displacement allows 20-percent more torque than its chief competitors, while at the same time being lighter, more fuel-efficient and more drivable.

After it debuts in the ML63 AMG, the engine will go into the CLK63 AMG and E63 AMG, likely to be unveiled at next spring's Geneva show. In late 2006, the engine will make its way into the R63 AMG, and in early 2007, it will go into the C63 AMG and SLK63 AMG.

The ML156 engine won't be fitted into the AMG versions of the new S-Class — premiering at the Frankfurt show — the CL or SL until at least 2008. Those vehicles will feature more powerful versions of their current engines.

While this new engine is normally aspirated, AMG officials said the division will remain faithful to turbocharging where it makes sense.

YAY my turbos are coming soon. I know Jakpro1 and I are thrilled about this along with JamE55. Ah the days of AMG kicking some serious M *** are approaching rapidly.

Faster than the SL?!

Blimey - i would hate to think what the 0-60 would be on a machine like that!
Also wonder what the price will be.

Regards

Neil

You can bet it will be detuned as they won't want the SLK to embarass more expensive models. It makes sense for AMG to replace the current unit with the new one so that they can build one engine type, but that doesn't mean they will all have the same power output. It will be more than the 55 but I should think around 400bhp is likely.

If you are a bored petro-sheik and can find new ways to spend money you can simply send back your SLK63 to the AMG workshop and ask for the racing car fit-out with widow-maker performance.

The car you buy in the store is a compromise between performance, safety and durability. If you want to just go-for-it and to heck with the life of the engine then forget Kleeman, forget pulleys, forget chips ..... just leave it in AMG for another month and leave a blank check as you walk out the door.

After seeing the specification, design and build of a W208 racing car .... all I can say is carbon fibre is not just for looks - serious builders actually use it to increase body strength at low weight. Air suspension is an option too ... now I dont know if that is the semi-active or the fully active ABC version.

Stock machines are just consumer toys.........

Road & Track said the same thing (ML, then the SL and SLK get the 6.3 - which is really a 6.2, but who’s counting?). I would not hold either of them out as the authority of who gets what and when. For sure the 6.3 is coming, and the ML gets it first. After that, who really knows - MBUSA and they aren’t talking - yet.

Steve, the base 63 is 510hp. Both ML & R (same plant) will be 1st up. New slightly larger "C" for '07 is 3rd in line, then the SLK.NOT Detuned!! (All with 7 speed)
The big boys will get TT versions of the 63 for some real grunt.

The current base is 510 bhp to lug the mammoth weight of the ML. That doesn't mean a lower compression ratio using different pistons couldn't be easily used to reduce it.

it be detuned it probably will stick to the 5.4 litre engine with the new 4 va/cyl with about alittle over 400 horse power i think it makes the most sense.

True statement, but in todays age of electronics, it's much easier to limit power electronically. Save my post, this power output WILL be in both the "C" and "SLK". I do have reliable info. I'm not trying to start a "what if " post. I am new to this board, but not to AMG's. Time will prove it.
Enjoy your rides everyone.
Cheers!!
