Cayman vs SLK [+Scary SLR Crash Story Today ]
Hey guys,
After purchasing the SLK 55 and awaiting it's arrival in Feb, I have had doubts and bad thoughts about my selection of car. My dad obviosuly thought that a Merc was less expensive than a porsche, but the Cayman is the same price. I was wondering whether you think it was a better car.
My interests lye in elegance, speed, durability and basically college in L.A. I know the MERC is simply a MERC and therefore has the traits which one may find in a MERC. But I can't help think about the power of the porsche..
On a more daunting topic; I was driving down my road in my brothers GT3 when I spotted an SLR speeding up behind me.. he wasn't paying attension and was shouting down the phone. I saw that he wasn't stopping as I was due to a pedestrian crossing.. I beeped, at an attempt for him to look up.. he did.. but he was too late.. HE smashed the back of my car like a total fool at around 25-30 mph, messed up his car completely.. mine had damage... he was apologizing as I admired the wrecked SLR... however, my brother proceeded to "kkill" me when I got home with a smashed up car
Anyways, that's the story of my day
But i'm looking forwards to the SLK.. help ! Is it niceer than the CAYMAN

the slk has more power, i dont understand what ur saying
the slk is much faster in a straight line and has right now passing ability (torque). the cayman is more of a drivers car, it talks 2 u.
the slk is probably a better every day car.
im looking forward to test driving the cayman s, i think that it will b my next car b/c i enjoy driving and my amg cant keep up w/ my needs. (brakes overheat, diff overheats, power steering overheats, eats front tyres b/c its nose heavy and i have gone through 2 trannies, a set of axles, diff and numerous other parts)
they are 2 different cars.
from what u sad u nee, id go w/ the slk

Sorry, but a 997 is faster at the Ring. Of course, the 997S is even faster: about 15 seconds less.
Needless to say that the Cayman handles better in twisted track and it is far more easy to drive at the limit.

"Walter Rohrl recently managed an 8 min 11 sec lap of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in a PASM suspension and PCCB brake equipped six-speed manual Cayman S. That is 7.0 sec faster than the Boxster S and a stunning 4.0 sec faster than the Carrera 3.6!"
The new Boxster S is only 3 seconds behind the base 997 and 8min 18 seconds is Ferrari 355 country!

Sounds kinda difficult to believe in this story because the SLR is extremely rigid thanks to CF. During the South Africa press release one of them ended up in an accident with another car (fault of the other car, it was speeding and plowed right into the SLR), and whilst the SLR came out looking almost as if it was untouched, the golf or citroen (or whatever marque) was completely bent up and crushed.
Photos from the site of the crash proved this.

Joe,
Many of us on these sorts of car forums are untrusting sorts who like to see a bit of evidence when somebody says something that sounds a little unlikely.
This is not to say I/we don't believe you but you will do yourself a lot of favours if you post a few pictures of you brothers damaged GT3. A few pictures in the first place would have prevented a few of the above comments.
Of course the cynic in me now expects either no reply or that your brother is so annoyed at you that he won't let you take any pictures or your camera is broken......
If your story is for real then I hope you reported the SLR driver to the police for driving while using a hand held mobile phone, he will be done for driving without due care and attention which will help ensure there is nothing for you to worry about.

slr 's crash structure is made to "fold" in case of an accident.
cf doesnt bend, it cracks. (kimi's suspension at the nurgburgring is a good example, it just shattered)

The thread started mentioned that the SLR was completely messed up. Does this mean that it looked like the SLR that a UK boxer trashed while driving 100mph on the street? The car was noway near "bent up", it had a front section which was definitely trashed, but the SLR has two Formula 1 inspired CF tubes on either side of the engine which ensure the hexagonal safety cell of the occupants doesn't receive the engine in their groin.
The SLR has been shown multiple times to show very little external damage during an accident, and 20-30mph into another car is not enough to truly mess that car up (the GT3 would have been inched forward, also taking up some of the impact damage). The result would have been an SLR driving into a brick wall at only 15mph, and crashes like that rarely cause a car to be completely messed up.
But then again, with no pictures, we cannot truly know what JosephN means by "completely messed up". What might be messed up for him, is just a fender bender for someone else. And if the SLR was truly messed up, then I would safely assume the GT3 with a rear mounted engine, would have been completely undriveable... so how did JosephN go back home with the GT3? I'd assume like everyone else, he would have taken a taxi, and let a tow truck transport the Porsche to the dealer for repairs.

so what u r saying is that u need to drive on the track to know about cars?
how does that make sense?
i drive in the canyons faster than most people would ever dare to drive on a track. i get a kick from the whole "danger" element (cops, traffic, cliffs.....)
they dont have that at the track.
i comment on most posts cause i know most things

No...but we can assume that yet another thread on mbworld has turned into a jackass flamefest.
