I recently sold my SLK55 and purchased a 2006 M3 with Competition Package. I know, the enemy. I love all cars what can I say? Anyway, I'm on the E46 fanatics website and there is this guy just bashing SLK55's and AMG. I'm leaving the thread for you to go to and read. I have a very warm place in my heart for my SLK55 and hate jerks who talk like this guy was talking.

I would love a few SLK55 guys to get on that guy. I have messed with him some but I'll get banned if I go too hard. He's just one of those guys who gets a car and then thinks there's nothing else worthy. He takes it personally when anyone makes remarks contrary to his and he uses outrageous statements like AMG is stupid and SLK55's are junk and have slushboxes. I love all kinds of cars and I hate guys like that. I'm the guy that will debate tit for tat until hell freezes over.

I may add some comments but there's almost no point. I found that many on the BMW forums are more car enthusiasts than just BMW enthusiasts. They're quick to raise the BS flag when it's clearly wrong information.

BTW, Like Jesseliu says, you should join us on the track event. It's going to be a blast. Hopefully you can attend. Besides, you'll be the fastest one there cuz every BMW is better than any MB

The truth is that an enormous amount of M3 owners seem to be 20 years old or so. I would love a few guys with modded cars to get on there and deflate that one guy. He really thinks that his car can beat any SLK55. I would like people that are more technically oriented to tell this guy what makes the SLK55 so good. Why the transmission isn't a slushbox. Many of you guys have a better grasp of what makes the SLK55 such a great car and I would like to see someone who is very techincal get on there and have a little fun.

Well, technically, the tranny in the SLK55 is a slushbox, and with a very, very good driver a decent manual transmission will beat it (the tranny), all else being equal (not to mention the power loss in an auto vs. a manual); however, most boy-racer types are not very, very good drivers, and will not be able to match the AMG 7G.

More to the point, the thing that makes an SLK55 faster than a US -spec M3 is physics: the SLK has considerably more horsepower, and vastly more torque and the weight is about the same (wrt the M3 coupe - the M3 convertible is a pig). You can't argue with physics. It is simply impossible for an unmodified US spec M3 to beat a '55 in a straitline drag race, even with a less skilled driver at the helm; on a twisty track it would be a bit more even.

The weight of an SLK55 and M3 is almost the same. The SLK55 I owned had a very aggressive shifting transmission. I think of a slushbox as a slow shifting transmission like in my grandpas Cadillac.

i read all your posts jak... that dude is just a big baby. the m3 is nice, i like it, but stock vs stock it has no chance!? I killed so many M3s on my way to boston from conneticut, they were modded, mine was all stock, and that thing couldn't keep up. i have lots of friends with m3s and when they drove my car, they were shocked how fast the SLK is. i love these so called enthusiasts that justify their purchase and go on about our SLK without having owned one at some point in their life, you had both

i beat my brothers e46 smg 8 out of 10 times and my car is likely around 3800lbs (its fully loaded w/ EVERY option for that year)
the m3 takes off faster (weight, lc, full dsc deac...) and i catch by the 1/4

I am not convinced those are drag racing videos.

The SLK is taping the whole thing, and nothing about the SLK's movement would suggest that the car is being driven to race the BMW.

What options would add 400lbs? I really don't think options play much of a role. Driver and passenger weight does and perhaps sparre tire, additional audio, etc.

The SMG M3 has launch control which helps it get good consistent starts. So, there can be times where the SLK with a bad start will lose to the M3. However, like AMG_55 points out, the SLK will catch up eventually.

I don't understand why ppl compare the SLK to the M3. One's a roadster and the other isn't. Why don't they compare our car to the Z4-M or other roadsters??

I personally love M3s, especially the rear LED lights. Sigh.

Because roughly they have the same hp. Maybe that's all what they care about. M3 rear LED lights are made by Hella AFAIK. Yes they are nice !
Even honda accord has nicer LED tail lights than we do.

Well congratulations on your new m3, that is the exact car I want to get used next year so keep me in mind! I happen to love both marques (porsche too) and belong to both boards as well, and the folks in here are much smarter and civil than in bimmerforums. Don't waste your time arguing with that guy, we all know which cars faster

So...I didnt read the whole e46 thread but I do know one thing for sure and that is that the m3 DOESNT HAVE A CHANCE against our slks (55). How do I know this? simply, because my older brother sold a few months ago his 06 m3 with dinan exhaust, headers, air filter, ecu done...and we raced several times here in Argentina and let me tell you guys, I pulled away so hard that when we were reachin 260 (kilometers per hour) I was more than 100 metres AHEAD....videos comin soon too, I will upload them SHORTLY.

My slk is bone stock. And its daamn fast!

Can I post a video of my SLK55 spanking many M3's on the track? including a brand new M5.. i would, but I know it's all down to driver.. and a 318I could beat me probably with a good driver.
