Video: where's the speed limiter

I've been meaning to test out the limiter on my car and finally found the ideal location and condition (long straight road, no traffic, no cops, no deers)

Had four runs but only two were recorded (darn battery ran out on the camera) Slowets one was at 150 and fastest one was 170. The two on this clip was at 160 and then I had to hit the brakes. wish there was more road!

i have a stock 06' car (not 030 equiped) so I'm not sure why it didn't stopped me at 155.

Mine definitely stops at 155mph. I once went downhill and it sped up to 160, but at that point the car completely stopped applying power to the wheels and I felt like I was coasting the rest of the way down...

I was running the car in S mode without paddle changes, so maybe it will let you go to higher speeds when running it in M mode and manually changing the gears? I tried once to find the top speed on 6th gear, and I hit 155mph and it wouldn't go higher. At this point, RPM's were at around 6300-6400rpm (i.e. almost on the red line).

But it might be that depending on your country, they may, or may not "have" to add the speed limiter at 155mph (250kph).

Hey, that's funny! I looked at your clip, and the fingers on the dials on your car are not red like they're on mine. I thought all 55's had red pointers, whilst the rest of the dash is white. Only the non-AMG's are supposed to have completely white dials... Is this a mod you did or did it come out like this? Maybe they changed this on newer model years (I wonder)?

You'r right, they do look white. It must be the filter on my camera's len and/or the angle that it was shot at.

i think I was kind of going down hill when I hit the 170 but did not feel like the power was cutting at all. Only when I hit the brakes that it started to pull back.
Not complainning though.

Thumbs up i drove 256 km/hr

thank Lizard. i have same question about it . i was driving on on freeway with my club members last week . 1st .. i hit on 250km/hr and i did not feel anything try to stop me ... i felt full power .. then i push harder ... i reached 256 km/hr .. and i felt i can go faster .. the reason i release the gas, there is speed camera ahead .. i will try next time ... i wanna know how fast can slk55 runs. i was in S mode . i will try M mode next time .
i guess i do not have to waste money to mod my ECU .. to remove the speed limited on 250 km/hr .....

160 mph

I have an 06, US spec here in Germany and had it up to 160 mph a few times. I could notice a slight decrease in power as I passed 155 but could push it up to 160. That was as far as it would let me push it on a level road. Never tried downhill to see what happened there.

I sold my SL600 but that was also supposed to be limitted to 250 kph and I had that over 265 and there were supposedly no mods done to remove that restriction.

It seems that what you get in restrictions can be as random as what exact electronics components you get. So many unexplained differences in these cars.

I must say that the car is rock solid at high speed. I've taken my IS350 up to about 130 and I could feel it starting to shake. The SLk remained very planted on the road. Only braking was the scary part.

Braking was actually impressive

As you said the SLK is very composed at high speeds and feels very planted and secure. 130-140 mph is a nice normal cruising speed when the autobahns are clear and dry. I was had the unfortunate opportunity to test out the brakes to their fullest under these conditions as well one time. I was between Wurzburg and Frankfurt on A3 with light traffic cruising at 130 in the left lane coming up on a big truck with a couple cars behind it not gaining on it in the middle lane slowly passing a couple trucks in the right lane. The left lane was getting close to merging as I approached all the vehicles. As soon as I saw the 600 m sign for the merge, I had a bad feeling about the first car behind the truck and started to cover the brake as I reached the car behind him. Just then he pulled in front of me doing 60 mph. The ABS worked as advertised and the car remained very composed as it scrubbed off 70 mph in a VERY short distance. Our bumpers stayed almost a foot appart as I got down to his speed and then backed off a little.

Now, of course I have to mention that this person who so nicely allowed me to test out the systems was another American, still oblivious to our near accident until he was almost past the truck.

I think there must be a lot of downforce generated by the SLK at high speeds.

When I drove over 200kph on the autobahn this summer, it was raining. The car was ROCK SOLID, no shakes, no aqua planing, it was just incredible. When I slowed down to 100kph, the car felt a lot less stable, more likely to let go and swivel around or something (of course it didn't, but I digress).

on one track, I get upto 145 on the straight then turn in without brakes and cross a transition and it's all very stable. crazy it keeps its head at silly speeds even in corners and over bumper roads. I'm impressed.

Just another impressed by it's performance. Other cars can be quite scary at speeds over 110/120. If I had more room, I could cruise for hours at 140mph. It is absolutely stable.

I reached 257kmh and stopped, because of traffic ahead, I have no limiter.
