Question New '07 SLK55 AMG - turbo?

Hello all - my first post, and I picked up a new SLK55 AMG over the weekend (black w/beige interior). When I initially inquired about it, I was told the engine was a turbo-charged V8. The dealer stated the "K" in SLK stood for Kompressor, However, I see no mention of a turbo in the car's specs anywhere. And although I'm not that mechanically inclined, upon popping the hood I couldn't see the turbo either. Can anyone confirm either way?

BTW - I'm still wowing over this machine!

Ron

No turbo, no supercharger. It's just a straight V8. Your salesguy was a moron. It's a fantastic car without it though. You can add one aftermarket if you like via Renntech or Kleeman for example.

Truely sad the salesman doesn't know a damn thing about the product he's selling...specially when it costs that much! He should be fired.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I did find out that he was fairly new there (a couple weeks).

Due to not getting out of the dealer with the car until just after midnight on Sunday, I need to go back there today to get the car's doc's, floormats, DVD nav disc and everything else that comes with the car. I'll be sure to "inform" him about this car.

Complain that you were misled in the purchase and see if you can get a OEM plexiglass windscreen and some other goodies out of the deal.

The "K" in the SLK actually stands for "Kurtz", which is German for "short" or "compact". So basically, compact SL. Anyhow, its up to you to do all the research before buying cars; its a fact that most car salespeople are morons. Also, kompressor is a supercharger, not a turbo.

I bought the car under the pretense of it not having anything other than a standard V8. I did indeed do my research beforehand. But when I was told it had a turbo, I thought I missed something.

I'm quite wowed by this vehicle, and now I'm just looking to see how much it'll cost me to get the MHI kit installed. I have the P3 package with the hands-free communications pre-wiring installed, now I just need the MHI kit. The MHI kit option runs for $208 according to MBUSA.com, but I have no idea what installation costs will be.

The K in SLK stands for the German word for short which is Kurz, an SLK is a short SL, makes sense.

There have been Mercedes with Kompressor in their name like the 2004 C230k but those were supercharged, not turbocharged. Your sales guy was a moron for sure.

Wow, just looked 2 posts up, its almost like you stole the thoughts from my mind before I even thought of them.....

Re: MHI tele pkg ...

Please let us know hat the total cost is that you get this for. The description of the P3 pkg is confusing (even deceptive). I have P3 and my dealer is telling me $1,500 to $1,800 to actually get the car set so I can use my Razr's bluetooth.

Regarding hands-free communication, it is indeed deceptive. The P2 and P3 packages come with what MB calls "Hands-Free Communication System Pre-Wiring". This is not all that's needed. You then need the "Hands-Free Communication System" kit (also known as the MHI kit) that installs into the pre-wiring. When you build your car at MB's web site, this is stated as a $925 option.

And you're still not done yet! You then need either the $408 "Hands-Free Communication System MHI Bluetooth Interface Module" which should work with just about any Bluetooth phone, or the $220 "Hands-Free Communication System MHI Cradle". Both of these items then plug into the MHI kit to complete your cell phone installation.

Unfortunately, if the vehicle didn't come with the MHI kit (not the P-package pre-wiring) already installed then it's about a $1200 option to get installed at about 2 hours worth of labor time and cost. And then you need either a compatible cradle for your phone, or the Bluetooth module.

So yeah - I can see how the dealer may be asking to charge the $1500-$1800 to complete the installation. But you should be able to get this discounted. My SLK55 didn't come with the MHI kit installed, and I was able to work with the MB parts to get the MHI kit for around $950 + tax (maybe less), but I still haven't gone that route yet. If I do, I should be able to work out some of the service dept's $120/hour labor rate as well. And then I'll likely get the cradle to use with my Cingular Razr phone.

I hope this information helps some. MB's information on this is indeed very deceptive, or just plain

Unhappy Not sure...

I don't know if I'll actually be keeping this car. The dealer is comming back to me almost a week later now, and saying that the bank is forcing an extra $75/month because of my credit.

Now this is after my credit has already been approved, the price already been agreed upon and the lease contract signed. However, after reading the contract in detail I do see the following clause:

"You have the right to return the Vehicle, and receive a refund of any payments made if the credit application is not approved, unless nonapproval results from an incomplete application or from incorrect information provided by you."

The vague clause above gives the bank a way to raise my rate should they do so, but I also get to return the vehicle and get whatever I paid so far back. I'll soon see if the dealer wants to eat that extra $75/month or take back a car (now technically used) with 300 additional miles on it.

btw: kompressor is the word the germans use for a supercharger in MB's, so that dealer IS kinda stupid by saying that it has a "turbo"...

Big slips from them...

given all the circumstances, the salesperson is either an idiot or a cheat, in both cases the dealer should just eat the $75 difference. Please let us know which dealer it is?

Ok, I got this all straightened out. The '07 SLK55 I got was on a lease. As it turns out, the bank or dealer didn't actually raise the rate. The initial application I was approved for was later denied by the bank. So the dealer went with two other banks that did approve me, but at a higher rate. So this really wasn't the dealer's fault, and I was able to return the car with no issues.

So for the increased monthly lease amount I was going to pay on the '07 SLK55, I went for a very clean '04 SL500 on a purchase.

2004 SL500 is much cheaper than 2007 SLK55 though. You can easily get an 04 SL500 for around 50,000$, which is what a 2005 high-mileage SLK55 costs. For 2007 SLK55, you're looking at over 60,000$. At that price range, you can easily get a 2003 SL55/SL600, which is another car I personally considered... there are plenty of 03 SL55/SL600 in mid 60's for sale right now.

Well, this is all a mute point now. But I was comparing a '07 SLK55 lease to a '04 SL500 purchase. For just under the lease payment of the SLK55, I got the SL500 purchased. I looked at 2 dealers in my area, and I think I got a pretty good deal - the SL500 is very clean, and I prefer the interior space to the SLK. The '03 SL55/600 I saw were actually more than the SLK55, and even much more than the SL500. Anyway, what counts is that I'm happy for now. I may look into trading in the SL500 next year for perhaps a '05 or '06 SL55 or SL600.

I see what you mean. I was just saying that with these cars, you really need to look around to find a deal. I actually purchased my car in Kansas of all places and then had it transported to Miami... there were no 06's SLK55 in Miami for low 50's, but a few up North. Mercedes of Miami actually tried selling me an 05 for 60,000$ ! Same thing with SL55... I almost bought a clean 03 SL55 for 62,000$ from Missouri lol. Maybe this has something to do with higher demand for convertible in the south (especially CA and FL), so the prices are higher than normal here
