Purchasing a 2006 SLK55 that has been in minor accident?

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on this forum to introduce myself and I also have a question for everyone on here.

I have been looking at used SLK55 AMGs for sometime now and I found one that has a minor accident reported on CarFax. The details are as follows: "Accident reported involving rear impact", the accident was classified as "Minor" which means (according to CarFax) the accident does not affect the operation of the vehicle and should not compromise the safety of the vehicle.

I inspected the car very closely and could see that the rear bumper had either been replaced and painted or repaired and repainted. The bottom of the trunk (where the license plate mounts) has been repainted also. There was no obvious evidence of any body work being done but it is pretty obvious, if you look closely, that it was repainted in those two areas.

My question for all of you is this: what kind of effect would an accident of this nature have on the value of the vehicle? The car was sold originally on 1-10-2006 and now has 38,000 miles on it.

Thanks in advance

It should probably be in the low 20s to mid 20s.

Thanks for the reply nycboy,

Really? Wow! They are way off! They are asking $35,900 and are willing to go down to $34,900

Needless to say we walked out of there shortly after that offer

The cheapest I have seen a similar SLK55 with the options listed below is about $29,900.

The SLK55 I looked at has the following options:

326
PREMIUM PKG

Thermotronic auto climate control
rain sensing wipers
HomeLink garage door opener

609
ENTERTAINMENT PKG

COMMAND headunit
Harman/kardon Logic7 surround sound system
Sirius satellite radio w/(6) month subscription
DVD navigation pre-wiring & iPod integration kit pre-wiring

319
LIGHTING PKG

bi-xenon headlamps w/washers

536
SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO

403
Airscarf Neck-Level Heating

I think they're really way off. A 2006 slk 55 with low 20s mileage will go for mid 30s.

Why don't you go for the 29,900, I think this is a good price if it does not have an accident.

My advice, PASS on that one. Too many great, well equipped, SLK55s, with low mileage out there. I'd spend more for less mileage and no accident and repair. I assume you can fly anywhere, so you have no boundaries to pick one up. I purchased my used SLK 55 on eBay, two years ago yesterday and it was, and is, a home run. Good luck in your search.

Thanks guys

We just looked at one tonight that was equipped the same as the other one, it 45,000 miles on it and they still wanted $32,900! It was in pretty rough shape as well. Most of them we have found are lease returns that people don't take care of

Yes, I can fly anywhere so that is not a problem We will have to do some looking outside the state of Texas and see what we can find.

Go look on ebay, I'm not sure where ncyboy is finding 55's in the low to mid $20's - even the auction numbers are higher than that. As others have said, steer well clear of the wrecked one.

UK-C200,

Thanks for the reply

Yes I looked on eBay, Autotrader, Cars.com and several other online resources for an SLK55 but, like you said, I do not see any in the low to mid 20's either.

To get a decent car it looks like you have to shell out about 35K or maybe a bit less if you can haggle with them

I will be serious about purchasing one in about a month or two so I am just browsing right now to get a feel for the market, unless I find a car that is a steal

Thanks for the replies everyone and if you happen across a Black SLK55 AMG in great shape just let me know

He was asking about the price of a damaged car. Go check his first post.
