I don't know the answer 100% for sure BUT if its anything like most other semi auto boxes it will shift up if you forget to. If you are in auto mode it will shift up early, but in manual it will let you rev close (or maybe to) the redline.
The engine management system won't let you damage the car by over revving it....... and thats a good thing!

Thank you man!
I got a booklet that says its identical to the F1 tech. it will not damage the car , but leave it closely to the redline until you shift, it will not shift to gear 2! if this was true, it will be really cool...
thanx anyways

it is 100% true. I was watching a tech video about it. This function is also in the new C55.
The thing that I have said or the thing that my friend said here?

So does the 7-speed gearbox have the F1 paddle shifters like the W211 E55? So you can drive in semi-manual mode as well as completely automatic.

Have a look at the short video in the following post:

Its of the SLK200 with 5sp auto...... it clearly shows that it can rev to the redline before changing up. So if the 5sp can do it you can be sure the 7G will as well!.
I would add something else though...... with an engine like the 5.5ltr AMG there isn't really any need to rev to the redline...... its torque curve will be dropping off by the time you get near the redline so accelleration will also be tailing off...... so to get the most out of the car you'd be better off shifting a bit sooner .... usually the optimum change would be as soon as the torque starts to tail off...... as long as the next gear up lands you in a strong part of the torque band.

My SLK32 will shift at or before redline in 'manual' mode. My ML430 will stay in whatever gear is selected and bounce off the rev limiter if you stay on the gas.
