There was a lot of great footage from todays' Belgium grand prix, you could actually hear the V8 of the SLK55 as it passed by the TV mics. They also commented on the car several times. They said is had been prepped by McClaren and had a 500hp motor.

I've driven the C55 which has the same motor though the exhaust is arguably going to be a bit different and its pretty muted until you hammer it. It sounds hot though, like a pumped up small block. Keep in mind that you'll be able to drop the top and get an earful. The Saf T Car was pretty loud but with 500HP you would expect some noise. Everything I hear about the SLK is pretty promising. Sounds to me like they are trying hard to ditch the girly car image of the SLK and maybe even a little in your face to BMW. and Porsche.

anyone know HP vs weight ratio? light weight is always better than a heavy car with much more weight

I am only repeating what the F1 announcers said about the car. I am inclined to believe it as the saf T car has to bust *** in front of the F1 cars so that they can stay cool during caution laps. It is driven by a DTM champion and if you watch him he is definetly pushing the car pretty hard.

I made some mpegs when I was driven with the CLK saftey car at "Le Castellet" (France) during the SLR test days in spring this year. Unfortunately these files are quite huge (+70 MB) but soon there will be a webpage, dedicated to my SL65, and some streams of these event.
kind regards from France

Thanks for digging that out, I had actually read it before, my bad. I should e-mail the broadcasters at F1 and point out the oversight. The FIA should fine them or make some new rules about improper dissemination of information regarding safety car specifications.

I expect they were getting confused with last season's safety car, which if memory serves me correct, was an SL55 AMG, which does have about 500bhp of course.
