Talking Test drive of the first SLK55 AMK in the UK

The car arrived today and I've got it until Friday...... so a full review will follow once I've got a few more miles under my belt.

The car I've got on loan is the MBUK Fleet press car and its so fresh off the boat that not even MBUK had a chance to drive the car before I got my (very lucky) mits on it!

Videos and more pics to follow as well as a full review

Just as a teaser...... nothing I have driven on the road (except the SL55) is as quick from a standing start as the SLK55! Not many other cars would have much chance beating this beast away from the lights unless the other driver is Schumacher!

I don't think it's the first in the UK! The first customer cars were delivered in December, I believe.

Thats what I thought as well but MBUK claim its the first...... not even they have had a drive yet.

I stand to be corrected however as I wouldn't be surprised if they are completely wrong!

Well it just goes to show that management/marketing are living up to their reputation of knowing absolutely nothing:

https://mbworld.org/forums/slk55-r171/92361-my-slk55-amg-has-arrived-early.html

It would be useful if people would bear that in mind in future, when taking 'information' about future engines, increased or decreased UK allocations etc, as gospel. If they don't even know they have delivered some cars, how on earth are they credible with regard to what's coming in future

Fair enough...... can't say I'm surprised that MB don't know their **** from their elbow. If its old new does anyone still want a review or will I be wasting my time?

Yes please! Didn't mean to spoil your topic. I'm sure we would all like to hear about what we are waiting for (I know I would).

Heres a little video for starters SLK55 drive

Putfile.com downloads the video before playing it so be patient..... once you've seen it you'll find a .wmv file (just over 5Meg) in your temp internet files folder..... copy it if you want to keep or replay it in Windows Media Player.

I noticed you got the exclamation point in the yellow triangle. Did you have the ESP turned off? This is what I have read in the Kill Stories area one does if racing?

I am always trying to make myself a more efficient driver and, actually, I use the ESP as a training device, if you will. From what I understand, the engine with cut out for a microsecond if it senses you are beginning to burn out, but if you are efficient taking off at the line, the warning light won't come on and the ESP won't kick in?

Purely in the interests of science I did have the ESP turned off for the video...... a bit of wheel spin makes a good noise!...... however the AMG has so much torque that ESP will kick in even in dry conditions on a straight road so you'll probably see that warning triangle quite often!

Just managed to see the video...

Is it me or is the sound pretty tame? Maybe the engine's not fully broken in. Another thing, that 7 G tronic is a bit annoying isn't it, so many gear changes before 60 mph, 2nd seems absurdly short. I guess its just me as I am used to the 5 speeder too much.

Why Mercedes chose NOT to have 7 equally spaced gears with a high final ratio ala M5 is beyond me, that 7 speed auto really takes the fun away from hearing that V8 sing properly...

It bothers me that soon enough it wil be standard fit across all AMG's!

I tend to agree about the 7G spoiling the fun...... more on that when I get round to writing my review...... but I think the bad sound is just that my camera isn't great....... the engine and exhaust sound fantastic!
