Ceramics aren't cheap to replace, just look at Porsche's PCCBs as another example.
As for the CSL, the price on those brakes is exaggerated somewhat, by around $15,000.

While I was having my SLK 350 serviced today, I was looking at a customer's SLR in the dealer's shop area. The service writer told me that the car was getting new brakes installed. He said that the entire job including new rotors
($10,000 each) will cost the owner around $43,000. I'm glad I have an SLK.

My local MB Dealer's Service Mngr is a friend of mine and he told me they just did a factory recall on the brakes of the SLR McClaren they have on the showroom floor... If I remember right, he said the recall involved all the brake pads and the cost was $12000...! It takes special tools, a specially trained Technician, special air in the shop ( OK, that's a lie.. ) and a special price too... The topic came up when I mentioned to him that my '04 CLK 50 Amg just notified me of "Service B" and we were talking about the price...

Just surfing MB org today and saw this thread. I like the SLR, probably could never afford one... but nevertheless...
I think the repair costs are relative right? For example, my 2006 E350 costs roughly $49K new... brake job F&R is quoted by MB at $1,450. That is about 2.95% of the car's value. In just keeping with relative numbers... a $400K SLR brake job would be $11,800. Add in the special, rare and MB prestige factor... and I think you come close to $20K.
As stated, high dollar cars come with high dollar maintenance. I just looked at a 2004 Maserati Coupe with 12K miles. Affordable at a used price of $53,500... however, when the service tech told me $2900 to replace clutches... (cambiocorsa) that is considered wear and tear item... I realized I was looking at the wrong marque...

speculate no more on the brake repair for an SLR it is at least 40k for parts labor etc....
our dealer got an slr and we were all curious on how much brakes were for the car...and believe me it is around 40k.
