There are too many really nice cars in the $200k+ price range. I don't know why MB tries to compete in that market segment, kinda like Lexus with that IS-F. I guess with a limited production run, they can be profitable as long as it's a chasis in which they've already made money on (such as the SL63BS and the CLK63BS), but with SLS and kinda-sorta the McLaren SLR, which is almost a new design (SLS based on the Dodge Viper and the SLR sharing a lot of R230 parts), they may be able to make some money from the few car collectors. They're definitely not targeting any of us; more like the $30MM net worth people that just like to collect cars.

However, for the rest of us, before I bought my LP640, I was considering the SLS. But c'mon... is that really a choice?

Is it strange to say the SLS is an allround better car than the LP640? especially taking into account both prices?

I havent seen you for a while jl88...congrats on that lambo...hell of a car

I feel many potential SLS owners already have quite an exotic stable and this new Gullwing AMG is MB's new prize stud

apples vs oranges

jl 88's first sentence is accurate; got lost in the fog after that. sls definitely competitive with anything in its price range and far more liveable/practical than many.

I disagree that SLS targeted at the $30MM and up crowd, though I'm sure many from that crowd will buy one too. The LP640 outprices the SLS considerably and is a harsh, bull of a car (bad pun intended). Many people who have $200k to spend on a car want something fast AND luxurious. I think MBZ nailed it. The SLS is beautiful, rare, unique and is still a Mercedes.

Unhappy

Finally had a chance to drive the SLS.
It truly is beautiful,it handles great, plenty of power, nothing to complain here.
It is a FLOP though, totally useless to anyone of my size (6'4" ,210lbs).
My forehead was inches from the A Pillar,my knees were pushed against the lower dashboard in order to recline the back just a bit and when I pulled the door shut,it slammed the top of my head so bad my teeth rattled.
It is one of the best sports cars on the market for the money it costs but only for midgets....
Btw,I have no problem as far as roominess with any newer (from 1995) Ferrari,Porsche or even Lamborghini, the only car that is more cramped then the SLS is the Elise/Exige.

Very interesting input, I saw just prior to the LA launch but never took the opportunity to sit in it...I'm 6'4" as well but about 230 so I guess I'd be in the same predicament, not that I'm in the market anyway. Thanks for posting.

i guess u think 5'8'' is midget. i have no problem with it actually found comfortable in the car. no problem reaching the door for closing either. i do see a 6'4'' giant have fitment issue though.

"Midget" was meant with tongue in cheek.
I was a bit shocked though to see that Mercedes would make a car that would be impossible to drive for a significant number of drivers.

Why would you compare a car that is much more expensive ? The two cars are absolutely not in the same range. Perhaps had you picked up an Audi R8 or a Gallardo. The 640 and SLS are not in the same niche . If you were looking at an SLS and 640 and decided to spend 150-250k more for slower track times hats off..

Here is why people are buying the SLS, it EATS THE COMPETITION IN ITS CLASS.. SLS vs Gallardo SLS wins, SLS vs R8 , SLS wins, SLS vs SL65 , SLS wins,

Why does it have to be new car vs new car?

2007 LP640's are in the 200k range. Which is the same price range as the SLS.

Like I said previously, when you're in the 200k+ price range, there are a lot of nice sports cars out there. MBUSA hasn't been successful competing in that market (SL63BS).

oh sorry I thought you purchased new.

So would you rather have a 2010 LP640 and spend 400k vs a new SLS?

I will not believe a guy of that size would fit in SLS until I see it myself.

As I said, I am 5ft 9 inches and about 220lbs, but still found it excepionally
tight. Perhaps the seats loosen up with use, your wallet sure does.

To compare new-used is like comparing stock-modded...it's easier to avoid the comparison imo...

Amazing what a couple of PM's can dig up. The guy that was in Laguna was actually the AMG Private Lounge Editor. He has a Black SLS and is not 6'7 but actually 6'9".

Crazy that he fits in and guys that are much smaller are having so many problems.
