Supersprint'S SLS AMG Long Tube Headers & Full Exhaust R&D: World Exclusive

This article is from Supersprint Official Research & Development Blog - Supersprint Labs where we take you inside Supersprint's R&D effort on various cars, explaning in full details the processes involved in crafting our world renowned exhaust systems.

**For pricing information, send us a PM or contact your local dealer.

Back in 2011, Supersprint got its hands on Mercedes-Benz AMG’s latest work of art; the SLS AMG. We have developed various exhaust configurations for the SLS AMG including world exclusive short and long tube headers. The whole research & development process was thoughtfully documented.

Stock headers

Like most naturally aspirated AMG cars, the SLS AMG suffers from a poor exhaust design which hinders its performance and reduces potentially much higher performance from their engines. The main issues are with the headers; they are outfitted with 4 ceramic catalytic converters, short primary pipe length, reduced piping diameter and and a performance hindering header design.

Supersprint Headers Development

Road version

Supersprint begun development with a short tube header with floating merge collectors. It’s goal was to offer a better performing header package through an equal length and longer primary piping design while still offering emission friendly HJS Metallic racing catalytic converters. The primary pipes are larger than OEM at 50mm. The header and catalytic converter package can be fitted with the OEM center pipes.

Racing version

After the initial short tube header development, Supersprint set its sights to developing a race derived long tube version without any catalytic converters for those that wanted the utmost performance and sound from their SLS AMG. The primary pipes were extended and mandrel bent for perfect under body clearance.

Due to the longer primary pipe design, Supersprint went through numerous revisions to reinforce the headers to avoid any potential cracks. The 02 sensors also required many revisions to allow the OEM ECU to properly adjust to the new exhaust parameters. We offer optional micro catalytic converters to avoid check engine lights (CEL). For max performance, we recommend to tune the OEM ECU. The long tube headers can be fitted with the OEM center exhaust. The final production headers are electropolished for a durable – mirror like finish.

Supersprint’s patented floating merge collector

At close to 100hp per liters, the 6.2 AMG engine in the SLS AMG is at its highest level of tune along with the upcoming SLS AMG Black Series. It thus generates a lot more heat which as a result forces the exhaust to expand and contract depending on usage.

AISI 304 stainless steel has a consistent thermal expansion factor, and the pipes tends to extend along their axis. With the 4 into 1 header design, the primary pipes follow very different paths but with the same length. If the primary pipes are welded, there are critical tensions on the collectors and on the flanges. The farthest cylinder from the collector usually has the most tension while the one with the more curved path has the least tension.

With SuperSprint’s patented system, the pipes are free to expand and the leakages are avoided by the spring system. Even in the case of a seal failure, they are inexpensive and easy to replace. Instead if a single piece header cracks, it has to be removed and welded. Leakages on the head flanges are far more dangerous than on collectors because of the position and higher temperatures and pressures.

This first in the industry allows for ease of install by separating all primary tubes from the collector system. This feature permits the individual install of each primary tube in those hard to reach spaces. Supersprint’s proprietary spherical composite compression seals are held in place by heavy tension springs creating a leak proof joint. The unique long tubular design ensures the best possible performance. This header features our special spring loaded collector flange design for flexibility under load and extended longevity.

Center & Rear exhaust development

The OEM center exhaust features a small H pipe and 2 bullet style resonators. For optimal performance, Supersprint engineered a revised center section without resonators and the addition of a X-pipe. This addition promotes better performance gains and smooths out the sound. The downside of the X pipe is the toning down of the traditional AMG metallic rasp. For those that prioritize the traditional AMG sound over performance, we have developed an independent center exhaust without the X-pipe.

The SLS AMG comes from the factory with a throaty exhaust note, this comes from an aggressively tuned rear muffler. As a result, when you fit the long tube headers along with Supersprint’s center exhaust, the OEM rear exhaust is overwhelmed and the sound is extremely loud.

Unlike most exhaust companies, Supersprint hand builds all its components outside of the HJS catalytic converters, as such they also build their own mufflers and develop specific internal patterns and constructions per vehicle application. We have developed a rear exhaust that is actually quieter than the OEM exhaust, it cancels out certain frequencies and lowers the overall exhaust note to acceptable levels. The rear exhaust is compatible with the OEM exhaust tips or can be fitted with Supersprint’s 4x90mm tips.

we recommend to couple the headers with our micro catalytic converters to avoid check engine lights (CEL). For max performance, we recommend to tune the OEM ECU.

What's the main difference between the road and race headers?
Anyone in the Los Angeles area running either the road or race headers?
If so who did the installation?
Did they have to drop the engine to for the install?

Please let me know, thank you!!

The FAA is debating offering guidelines for drone operators in the private sector by 2015, and European regulators are meeting on February 9 to iron out rules for UAVs in EU airspace. Domestically, lobbyists are petitioning the agency to give wide leeway to the use of unmanned aircraft for commercial photography, videography, and surveillance purposes.
