SPOTTED! Transport with SMARTs aboard
Burbank, California 4:30 PM
Today I saw an unusually large number of vehicles onboad an auto transporter travelling north on Interstate 5 at Burbank Boulevard. At first I thought it was a load of golf carts from a distance. As it approached I saw the distinctive safety cage of the SMART! About a dozen packed on one trailer. The only other Smart I have seen in the US was in MARK CUMMINS driveway.
I thought the Blue car with a silver stripe was the best looking unit. Have the dealers been announced? Can you go pick up one anytime soon?

I don't think you can really purchase one off the lot.
smart is making people go through a reservation process where you put down a $99 deposit and then wait for a few months before you can configure the car. After you finally configure it, then it's about another 3 months until your car's delivery.
The people that are getting the cars now paid their reservation in March 2007 and configured their car September 2007. So it's been about a 10 month wait to get one.
I'm not sure when they will start selling the cars off the lot, but right now it seems like that may be a while since there are so many reservations for them to fill.

And you may want to also consider that not everyone who put thier 'refundable' deposit down, is going to folllow through with it. Get in good with your local dealer and I'm sure you can get one of the non-secured models well before a custom build would arrive. Just expect to either sacrifice your personalization, or to pony up a little extra $.

Penske West Covina has a couple of Smarts available for a test drive. I drove one about a week ago.
Mercedes in Laguna Niguel is also a Smart dealership.
As of now the only way to get a Smart is to go on line and place a $99 refundable deposit and wait your turn in line. The price is not negotiable.
I encourage anyone who is interested in buying a Smart to test drive one for more than just around the block

Juts got an e-mail today advising that my Smart was inbound and they invited me to come in and test drive a couple of their cars tomorrow. Not sure if I'm going to follow thru with this...I'm out of garage space...even for a Smart!!

I've received an email fon 2/1/08 from smart indicating that my car (res # 1190 series) would be at my dealer in Pittsburgh, PA w/in 30 days, and I should be expecting a phone call w/in 7 days----

Went to the dealer today. Has about 20 cars ready to deliver as soon as they get paperwork together. Mine is due in in next 30 days...same e-mail as giffscpa got.

there is a new smart dealership in weston, fl with a bunch of them on site, I would guess over 100... they are so tiny, I almost stopped in to test one out.... $17k golf carts!

When did you put down your deposit? And if you find one that is not black, you can at least change the body color panels to black later.

I ordered about in February last year, the local San Jose Smart dealer said they had some already, and that it would be about same time as order, so about now. But, he didn't show mine in the current list of inbounds. Bummer, I haven't owned one in 10 years. I'm really looking forward to one again.

Do you have any info on the launch of the 99$ deposits? I got the feb date from the dealer since I said I signed up basically at launch of the program from a tip from mbusa, and the dealer said "oh, that must have been in February"

You should have an e-mail confirming your $99 reservation. In that e-mail you should be able to find your reservation number. Have you configured your car yet?
